The wings are split right down the middle and each side tells half the flag story. The left set, upper and lower, are a deep royal blue packed with white five-pointed stars arranged in neat rows across the wing cells. The right set mirrors the wing shape but fills each cell with horizontal red and white stripes running edge to edge. A bold black satin outline traces the full butterfly shape and divides every individual wing cell, so the vein structure of a real butterfly is actually in there underneath the flag pattern. The body is a slim black satin column with two thin curved antennae arcing up from the head.

Only four colours but the digitising in industry software makes it look like more. The density sits at 1108 stitches per square inch and the four sizes run from a compact 2.02 by 3.01 inches up to a full 4.7 by 7.01 inches. Stitch range 14k to just under 37k so even the biggest size keeps a reasonable run time. A customer sent me a photo of the 4-inch on a white tote and the colours popped so clean she said people were stopping her to ask about it at a fourth of july street fair.

Use a medium cutaway on stable wovens and float a topping layer on knits so the star outlines dont sink into the loops. Avoid dark backgrounds for this one, the white stars wont read against navy or black and you'll lose the whole flag read. Hoop firmly and dont skip the topping on stretch cotton, the cell lines need a flat surface to register cleanly.

Send me a quick chat if the wing cell lines bleed into the star fill on your machine and Ill resend a corrected file.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • 4th of July white tote bagUse the 4-inch on a plain white canvas tote and the blue and red read crisp against the unbleached ground for a clean fourth of July carry
  • Independence Day t-shirt sleeveThe 3-inch fits a t-shirt sleeve cap without stretching the hoop into the seam allowance, great for a coordinated family outfit
  • Patriotic summer tote or market bagStitch the largest size on a natural canvas market bag for a statement patriotic piece that reads well at outdoor summer events
  • Girls holiday shorts pocket embroideryThe small 2-inch sits neatly on a shorts back pocket for a subtle patriotic detail on girls holiday separates
  • Red white and blue pillowcase accentPut the 4-inch on a white pillowcase corner for a seasonal accent that works across the whole summer not just one holiday
  • Summer camp backpack badgeUse the 2-inch on a canvas backpack flap as a badge-style detail for a summer camp or outdoor adventure kit
  • Patriotic napkin set corner detailStitch on white cotton napkin corners for a festive tablescape that can be reused year after year rather than buying disposable
  • Memorial Day canvas zip pouchThe 3-inch fits a canvas zip pouch front panel for a handmade memorial day gift or craft fair item

Behind every stitch

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
