The canopy of this tree is built entirely from puzzle pieces. Not a few scattered here and there but the whole crown, branch tip to branch tip, packed with interlocking segments in 12 different colours. Orange, brown, green, powder blue, blue, yellow, dark magenta, pink, sand, black, red and a warm orange-red all show up across the piece. The trunk comes up from the bottom in brown satin and then the branches split out and every single section of leaf coverage is a puzzle shape. Its genuinely one of the more ambitious autism awareness designs Ive stitched out.
The 12-colour palette is what sets this apart from the standard 4-colour autism pieces. Each puzzle segment sits inside its neighbouring pieces, and because the colours jump around the canopy rather than grouping by colour, the whole tree reads as one unified joyful mass rather than separate colour blocks. Last april one customer needed multiple of the 6-inch on cream hooded sweatshirts for an autism awareness week fundraiser at a primary school and the kids absolutely went wild for the colours.
White, cream or pale grey fabric is where this design belongs. The puzzle segments need a clean pale base or the 12 colours start to compete with the background instead of each other. Use a firm woven cotton or a quality sweatshirt fleece with a stabilised base. Cutaway stabiliser is essential here, theres too much directional satin in the canopy for tear-away to hold it flat through 11 colour changes.
Plan for 11 colour changes and 148 trims on the largest 8-inch size. digitising tools digitising means the underlay is already built in so dont skip it by adjusting tension too low. Stitch counts go from 32,492 on the 5-inch up to 55,070 on the 8-inch, which is a proper complex run. Hoop firmly, use your topping on textured fleece, and take your time with the thread swaps.
