I spent kinda a long time on the fur shading for this one. Donkeys have that distinctive cross marking on their back and getting it to look natural in satin columns rather than just slapped on top required digitising the body fill in two separate passes, the base grey first, then the darker stripe overlaid on top with its own directional underlay. The result at the full 7.5 inch size is 50,172 stitches at a density of 138, which is really dense territory, and I mean that in a good way, the shading genuinely holds up.

Because density 138 is high you kinda need to be serious about your stabiliser choice. Use medium-weight cutaway on everything, dont try to use tearaway just because it's a woven cotton, the stitch count will push tearaway off at the edges. A topping on any textured fabric like terry or fleece is non-negotiable. Pair it with a 80/12 embroidery needle for the larger sizes and slow your machine down for the dorsal stripe sections where the two fill layers cross. Run the underlay at a lower tension than your usual setting for the grey coat sections and youll get much cleaner coverage.

Customising the ear colour is something a few customers have asked about, the inner ear pink is a single stop, easy to swap for any pastel if you want a personalised colourway for a nursery project. I had a customer reach out last month saying she stitched this on a grey velour baby blanket and the grey body tones sort of merged beautifully with the fabric, she kept only the lighter muzzle and stripe colours visible and it looked really intentional. Place it on mid-toned fabrics for that effect, or go with white or cream for full contrast. Machine wash on a gentle cycle once done, the dense fill holds its shape well.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Farm-theme nursery cot blanketGrey velour cot blanket centred; the coat tones blend with the neutral fabric in a really intentional way, almost like the donkey belongs there.
  • Baby onesie chest placementCotton onesie chest in a small hoop; medium cutaway essential on knit fabric at density 138, no shortcut works reliably here.
  • Kids bedroom accent pillowLinen or cotton canvas accent pillow where the dense tactile fill is something you can actually feel under your fingertips.
  • Baby shower cotton gift toteNatural cotton tote bag for a quick farm-themed baby shower gift; tearaway on woven cotton, holds through washing fine.
  • Toddler hooded towel front panelHooded cotton terry towel front panel; topping film before you hoop, medium cutaway behind, the face detail stays sharp.
  • Quilted nursery wall hoop artCream cotton in a seven-inch hoop for nursery wall art; the lighter muzzle and dorsal stripe read as the focal detail.
  • Canvas backpack front embroideryCanvas backpack front with medium cutaway; the high density handles canvas texture better than lighter stabilisers would.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
