Knocked out a few layout versions before it felt right. The black heart outline is obvious, but the footprints dont sit inside it the way youd expect. Theyre breaking out at the lower-right corner, heel overlapping the heart line, like the baby is stepping through it. Three tiny solid hearts scatter below the feet. Its a small compositional detail and its what makes it feel less like every other baby-footprint design ive seen.

The heart is a thin satin column outline, not a filled shape, so theres lots of open negative space inside. The footprints are solid satin fill, fully packed, which means theyre reading clearly against the open heart even in a single colour. Each footprint has the round heel pad, five individual toe circles, and the main foot body all digitised as separate elements in embroidery software so the shapes are anatomically right and theyre not just blobs. Density is very light at 172 stitches per square inch because most of it is open outline work.

Five sizes from about 3.41 by 3.51 inches up to 7.29 by 7.51 inches. Stitch counts stay low across the board, between 3,408 on the smallest and about 9,400 on the largest, so its running quick even on the big version. Single colour, one thread load, no stops. One of the quicker ones to set up and run.

Last october a customer ordered it for a baby shower, she wanted the embroidery centred on the mother-to-be blanket and each guest square left plain to sign around it. She told me it was the nicest thing on the whole gift table. Stitch it in pale blush on white waffle knit, soft blue on cream flannel, or ivory on natural linen. Any soft nursery tone is going to work. Avoid bold saturated colours, theyre too harsh against the delicate open-line style of the heart outline.

Keep tension on the lighter side to avoid pulling the thin heart column in on itself. Pair cutaway under stretch fabrics like jersey or waffle knit, tearaway is fine on wovens. Hoop drum-tight and run at slow to moderate speed on the outline. If the toe circles are shrinking on your preview theyre probably below minimum satin width for your machine, try the next size up.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Baby shower gift blanket embroideryCentre the 7-inch on a white fleece blanket as a baby shower focal piece, add the babys name below after birth
  • Newborn keepsake onesieStitch 4 inches on a newborn onesie chest in soft blush, the low stitch count wont bulk up on delicate cotton
  • Nursery wall art on linenFrame the 5-inch stitched on cream linen as nursery wall art, a simple wooden hoop frame keeps it minimal
  • Baby memory book coverEmbroider the 5-inch on the linen cover of a memory book where photos and momentos from the first year get stored
  • Personalised muslin swaddle cornerAdd the 3.5-inch in ivory to the corner of a muslin swaddle blanket for a personalised handmade baby gift
  • New parent tote bag giftPut the 4-inch on a canvas tote filled with new parent essentials, single colour works on almost any bag

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
