Ok so this is the cluster butterfly and its got that proper optical illusion thing going on. From far away it just reads as a single big butterfly silhouette but the moment you step closer you realise the wings themselves consist of dozens of smaller butterflies all clustered together at different angles. The body sits as a solid dark vertical line right down the middle holding everything in place.
Single colour thread which is just black, theres no other colour breaking up the effect which is what makes the illusion work. Density runs around 551 stitches per square inch and the silhouette holds tight even at the bigger sizes. The smaller butterflies in the cluster sit as neat little outline-and-fill combos so each one stays readable.
I drew this for a customer last spring who was doing tattoo flash inspired apparel and she wanted something a bit moody and conceptual. Realy took off after that, atleast 3 customers a month now order it for boho tees and bookish merch. One customer told me she gives it as a graduation present because the idea of growing from smaller pieces felt meaningful.
Comes in 5 sizes from 3.5 through to 7.5 inches across, the small one sits sweetly on a chest pocket and the 7.5 inch centres the back of a tote or hoodie. Stitch on cream cotton, linen, canvas, denim or fleece. Slip tearaway under woven fabrics, switch to cutaway for jersey. Skip darker fabrics, the black silhouette wont show, opt for pale palettes only. Press the back side after stitching to flatten the satin column body neatly.

About the artist
Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site
Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.
That's the joy I work for.
The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
