The butterflies here form the actual shape of the heart. Six of them arranged so that their wings trace the curve of a heart outline, connected by thin looping swirl lines. Tiny floating hearts fill the gaps between em. From a normal distance you read it as a heart, up close you realise its all butterflies. I really like that dual-read quality, it makes the design more interesting to look at than a standard heart fill.
4 colours, soft pink for the wing fill, white for the markings on each wing, purple on the body sections, and black for the antennae and outlines. 3 colour changes. The density is 304 which is relatively low, the wings have open directional fill rather than dense satin, so the fabric texture shows through and that gives the whole thing a lighter more delicate quality. Smallest size is 4.08 inches wide at 8,792 stitches, largest is 6.8 inches wide at 15,520 stitches.
This is one of those designs that works for valentines day but also works into spring without any awkwardness. I get messages about it from people stitching gifts for butterfly lovers and flower garden fans who arent even thinking about valentines at all. Thats the range this one has. Run tearaway under cotton or linen, cutaway if youre working on any stretch knit.
Best on white, cream, soft grey, or pale lavender fabrics where the pink and purple really sing. Skip dark backgrounds here, the soft pink wash almost disappears on navy or black. Try the 5 inch feature on a shirt front or on the face of a canvas tote bag. Youll be surprised how much it reads differently depending on the fabric colour you choose.
