I really like how this one came out. The butterfly itself isnt drawn the usual way - the wings are made entirely from teardrop petal shapes, like little satin columns fanning outward from the body. No solid fill, just open petals with visible stitching between them, which gives it this light papery look rather than that heavy blocky feel you get with alot of butterfly designs.

The trail is whats different though. Instead of just a butterfly floating there, the design has a dotted arc that sweeps left and curves down into a heart outline, then loops back under. All those dots are small raised bean shapes, not just understitching. The whole thing reads almost like the butterfly drew the heart as it flew past.

Its all in one colour - just red thread. I get asked alot whether this works on dark fabrics and honestly its best on white or cream where the open petal structure actually shows. On navy or black you lose the negative space and it ends up looking like a blob. Stitch it on light mid-weight cotton, back with a firm cutaway stabiliser on knits, and youll get clean results across all 5 sizes. Smallest sits around 2.56 inches wide, largest hits 5.11 inches. Stitch count runs between 5,404 and 9,868 depending on size - pretty lightweight for a single-colour piece.

Last winter I had a customer who ordered this specifically for valentine pyjama tops for her daughters. She stitched it twice on the chest pocket area of two different sizes and said the satin petals came up really nicely on flannel. That was good to hear because flannel can be tricky to hoop. Use a no-show mesh stabiliser if you go that route and float it rather than hooping through the fabric itself.

Hoop firm, trim threads between the petals if any show, keep the tension consistent. Any problems with the download or the files just hit me up and I'll sort it out.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Valentine's Day shirts and pyjama setsThe single-colour design stitches cleanly on lightweight cotton and jersey without thread bulk, great for fitted valentine tops.
  • Tote bags for romantic gift givingStitch it centred on a beach tote front for a gift bag that doesnt need wrapping.
  • Pillow covers and cushion accentsThe open petal wings sit beautifully on a white cotton pillow cover, especially in red against cream.
  • Kids clothing - dresses, tops, onesiesSmall enough at 2.56 inches to fit a childs chest pocket or sleeve without overwhelming the garment.
  • Greeting card style hoop art for framingMount the largest size in a 6-inch hoop for a frameable romantic wall piece with minimal thread colours to source.
  • Anniversary or wedding favour pouchesStitch on small organza drawstring bags for wedding favours or valentines day gifts.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
