Set this one up as a butterfly that's been sliced clean through the middle. The top section shows the upper wings spread wide with the 2 curling antennae at the top, and the lower section carries the bottom wings and the tail. Between the two halves theres a horizontal gap, that empty band is where your monogram or name goes. The wings arent flat fill either, theres actual vein channels stitched in with directional satin lines, and small circular dots sit near the outer wing edges. My friend did the 4 inch version last summer on a baby onesie for a gender-reveal gift and added a script name letter between the halves using a second hoop pass. Simple idea, came out gorgeous.

Run a layer of cutaway behind your fabric for this one, the wing veining and directional fills need stable backing even on the smaller 3 inch size. At 7,300 stitches on the small end its not a heavy design but the density is around 467 per square inch which is moderate and the fill areas in the wing bodies are dense enough to distort lightweight fabrics without support. Single colour, black, 0 colour changes, 1 stop. The 6 sizes go from just over 2 inches wide up to nearly 6 inches wide, and from 3 inches tall to 8 inches at the largest.

Stitch the name in the gap after using a different hoop setup, dont try to include the monogram in the same hoop pass unless youve got a font digitised to match the black weight of the wings. Most people add a thin black satin letter or a script font in a contrasting colour, both work well. On white linen the black looks sharp, on pastel fabrics it goes softer and more delicate. Skip the topping on woven fabrics, the satin fill doesnt need it and it just adds extra cleanup time.

Use the 3 inch size as a shirt pocket accent with a tiny initial in the gap. Put the 5-in across the canvas tote with a first name centered in the split for a personalised gift. Stitch it on a baby blanket edge for a nursery keepsake that isnt overly themed. Dm me if the monogram font youre using is wider than the split and youre not sure if itll fit, sometimes a size up solves it without any redesign.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Personalised baby onesies and blankets with a name in the gapThree or 4 inch on a baby onesie with a script name in the gap makes a newborn gift that feels handmade.
  • Tote bags with a first name or initial in the splitFive inch version on a canvas tote with a first name in the split works as a bridesmaid gift or birthday bag.
  • Shirt pocket accents with a small monogram letterThe petite 3.5 on a shirt breast pocket with a single initial in the gap is subtle and refined.
  • Wedding party favor bags and bridal party accessoriesUse the 4-inch placement on favor bag panels with a last initial for a cohesive wedding table gift.
  • Girl's room wall hoop art with a name centered in the frameSix inch version on linen on the 7-inch hoop with a child's name lettered in the gap works well as nursery wall art.
  • Notebook covers and fabric journal panelsOn a fabric journal or notebook cover the 3 inch size leaves room above and below for other design elements.
  • Bridesmaid robes or getting-ready morning giftsFour inch on a satin robe breast area with a first name is a classic bridesmaid morning-of gift layout.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
