getting the underlay right on this took patience. Its a full circle composition, black base with a fuchsia outer ring, and inside you get this whole little universe packed together: a large golden moth in the centre done in outline running stitch with just enough tatami fill on the body to give it weight, a smaller solid purple butterfly lower down with proper satin stitch wings, a tiny gold one fluttering near the top, and two crescent moons, one gold with radiating ray lines, one purple tucked near the bottom left. Gold 4-pointed stars scattered all over, botanical stems curling around the edges with satin leaves, a yellow daisy, a rust flower, terracotta foliage at the base. Five sizes worth of work went into the digitising and you can feel it.

I made this for people who want something a bit different from your standard floral. The piece runs from 8,245 stitches at the smaller end and scales to 16,979 at 7.41 inches across, so theres alot of detail packed in even before you thread your first colour. Just last week a crafter who makes witchy-aesthetic accessories wrote me to say she'd ordered it twice, once for denim jackets and once for tarot card pouches, and honestly thats exactly where it belongs. The colour chart is rich: gold, magenta, purple, sage, rust, cream. About six thread colours to load, which sounds like alot but the thread changes are worth it when you see that moth come off a black jersey fabric.

Hoop your darkest fabric, get your topping on and let the outline moth build up first since the directional running stitch gives the wings that sketchy translucent look before the satin sections around it fill in. Skip the tear-away on denim, cutaway only. Anything with give, like jersey or fleece, wants a cutaway behind it too, the satin butterfly wings really need that stabiliser support underneath. Pick the 5 inch version for tote bags and the 7 inch for cushion covers where you want the full fuchsia border to land cleanly, and pair it with solid black canvas or a deep charcoal linen for the moodiest result.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Denim jacket back panelHonestly my favourite spot for this one: the 7 inch on a denim jacket back sits perfectly centred between the shoulders.
  • Black canvas tote bagTote bags take the 5 inch nicely, especially on black canvas where the fuchsia ring really pops.
  • Cushion cover or throw pillowNeeds a cutaway on stretchy cushion fabric but the 7 inch version on a velvet cover looks genuinely stunning.
  • Tarot card or crystal pouchThe 3 inch fits a small drawstring pouch without losing the star scatter detail, which suprised me the first time I stitched it.
  • Dark cotton hoodie chestHoop a dark charcoal fleece hoodie and centre the moth on the chest: the gold outline reads beautifully at arm's length.
  • Framed hoop wall artStretch it onto black linen in a 7 inch hoop, no backing fabric needed, just leave the raw edges and hang it.
  • Witchy-themed book bagA friend who sells at craft fairs told me she stitches the 5 inch version on black cotton book bags and sells out every time.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
