Sketched this up after several requests for something a bit more whimsical in the christmas lineup. Its a chubby baby dragon, big round eyes, stubby little wings folded at the sides, wearing a crimson santa hat with a cream pompom sitting slightly tilted on its head. The jade green scales are done in short satin columns so the colour reads well even on smaller hoops. Seven colours total, and the density sits at 1062 so its not gonna pull or distort on lightweight knit fabric.

my usual software is what I used for this one, 5 sizes running from 2.87 inches wide up to 6.13 inches, stitch counts from 20557 at the smallest to 48840 at the full size. The beard trim area around the hat brim uses directional fill at a shallow angle, which gives it that soft fluffy look rather than flat white. Pair it with a heavy cutaway stabiliser on stretchy navy kid tees or fleece, dont skimp on the backing because the scale columns are dense enough to push the fabric if its undersupported.

One customer grabbed the 4-inch version for a set of matching christmas stockings for her kids last december, stitched each kid's name below the dragon in a simple font. I realy love seeing that kind of personalisation. Add a topping layer of water-soluble film if youre running this on any textured fleece so the scale detail doesnt sink into the pile.

Stitch it on a navy tee and youre done. Pop the biggest size onto a zippered project bag or a velvet christmas stocking for something that stands out. Use a 75/11 needle for thinner jersey and step up to a 90/14 for denim or canvas. Skip dark red fabrics since the crimson hat will vanish against it. Best results I get come from running a test swatch first with this colourway, 7 threads is alot to manage if your machine bobbin tension isnt calibrated.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Kids christmas t-shirts and sweatshirtsStitch the 3-inch centre placement on a chest pocket area of a kids tee for a fun christmas morning look.
  • Christmas stockings with name personalisationRun the 4-inch file on a cuff of a felt stocking then embroider the child's name just below in a contrasting thread.
  • Holiday zippered project bagsThe 5-inch version fills a zippered pouch front nicely with enough border room to look intentional not cramped.
  • Festive onesies for toddlersUse the 2.87-inch smallest size on a onesie chest so the hoop fits without catching the snaps.
  • Christmas gift tags stitched on feltCut felt into tag shapes, hoop small, stitch the mini dragon and punch a hole in the corner for ribbon.
  • School holiday outfit embellishmentsGreat for embellishing a holiday dress or school uniform collar with the compact 3-inch version.
  • Velvet holiday pillow coversVelvet needs water-soluble topping but the result on a pillow cover is worth the extra step.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
