So this is a christmas tree, but the tree is actually a gnome in disguise. Or a gnome wearing a tree. Either way its kinda genius. The tree shape is normal enough, dark forest green with proper layered bough texture, red baubles sitting on the branches, and an orange five-pointed star sitting at the top with a black outline ring around it. But below the tree skirt theres a fluffy grey-white beard spilling out and two little feet poking beneath it. Thats the whole joke and it works every single time.

Eight colours do the work here. The greens handle the foliage, red for the baubles, orange for the star, grey for the beard, and black for the outline and boot details. White stitches break up the beard texture and add the bauble highlight dots. Really clean sequencing in the my workhorse software file, the tree layers go in first, then baubles, then the beard fills last so it sits on top correctly.

Six sizes from 2.5 inches right reaching 7.5 inches, so youve got options from a tiny badge patch all the way to a centrepiece design. Stitch counts run from 7k on the smallest up to 27k on the biggest. Digitising is tight, those short angled satin rows in the beard fill look fluffy without going fuzzy. Use a medium cutaway on woven cotton or felt for the smaller sizes. Tear-away is fine on stiff cotton twill for anything 5.5 inch and up. Hoop snug and use topping film if running this on fleece.

Best on white, red, natural, or cream fabric so the greens really pop. A customer last christmas sent me a photo of the 5.5-inch stitched onto a red linen kitchen towel and it looked like something from a Scandinavian holiday market. Honest, it was really good. Skip dark green or busy plaid because the tree will just disappear and you wont get that gnome reveal moment at all.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Christmas kitchen towels and tea towelsStitch on a red or white linen tea towel and the gnome-tree reveal is exactly the kind of holiday detail that gets noticed and talked about
  • Holiday stockings and tree skirtsWorks beautifully on a felt or cotton Christmas stocking and the fluffy beard detail looks genuinely hand-finished at any size
  • Festive kids Christmas pyjama patchesSend the small 2.5-inch onto kids christmas pyjama bottoms or a little patch on a onesie and it reads as a sweet seasonal detail without being too large
  • Santa sacks and gift bagsHoop onto a natural cotton Santa sack for a personalised gift bag that looks like a proper handmade market find
  • Christmas jumper or hoodie chest patchesStitch the 5.5-inch on the chest of a white or cream christmas jumper for a gnome-themed holiday top that doesnt take itself too seriously
  • Holiday table runner and napkin setsRun it across a linen table runner between other holiday motifs, the upright tree shape spaces beautifully in a repeating border layout
  • Handmade ornament and tree decoration basesBack the 3.5-inch with felt, cut it out and add a loop for a fabric tree ornament, the full colour design holds up at that smaller scale

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
