Heres the funny bird family I drew last summer after watching a bunch of cockatoos at the zoo. Five birds lined up on a striped branch, every one with its own face. Royal blue grump on the left, pink shrieker beside him, lil yellow chick in the middle, tall blue-headed peach bird with the long orange beak, then the scruffy orange fella on the right who looks dead unimpressed.

The feathers are stitched directional, brushed outward in proper thread-painted layers so theyll read fluffy instead of flat. Eight colours carry the load, soft pink, royal blue, mustard yellow, peach orange, grey, brown, white and black. Run polyester thread, the brightness holds wash after wash on cotton or linen.

Density sits at 693 which is on the meatier side, so hoop a midweight cutaway stabiliser under any apparel. Skip light tearaways here, the satin column outlines on the beaks and feet wont survive without proper backing.

Last christmas a customer stitched the 7 inch size onto a cream nursery quilt and sent her photo, the branch grounded the layout and the birds carried colour across mixed prints really nicely. Pop a 4 inch chest on a kids tote pocket or stitch the full hoop across a pillowcase, the googly eyes do the work.

Use the smaller sizes for tea towels and birthday cards, save the big hoop for cushions and quilt centres. Cut your jump threads close, the feather tips look cleaner without trim shadow hanging off the crests.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • kids room pillowcasesOn a pale cotton pillow the bright blues and pinks really sing, kids point at the goofy faces.
  • nursery wall hanging quiltsStitch it as the centre block of a 12 inch nursery quilt square, the branch grounds the layout.
  • bird lover canvas tote bagsLooks great on a heavy-duty tote, the striped branch reads as a built-in horizon line.
  • grandma gift t-shirtsSoft tee in heather grey carries the colours nicely without making them look too neon.
  • preschool teacher apronsAcross the apron chest panel the five birds feel like classroom mascots, kids love picking favourites.
  • birthday card embroideryMini version for a fabric birthday card front, runs at the smallest size and stitches in minutes.
  • kitchen tea towelsStitch onto cotton kitchen towels in the corner so the branch curls along the hem.
  • library reading corner cushionsOn a 14 inch reading cushion this one calms a corner, the birds are characters not noise.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
