This isnt a cartoon butterfly. Its the kind that looks like someone pinned it to a display board and photographed it, the wings spread wide, the colouring goes from a lighter sky blue at the top edge down through royal blue into deep navy near the base, and scattered across the wings are those burnt-orange copper spots with white centres. The body runs magenta-pink down the middle with fine black antennae curving up. Nine colours, all working together.

At 4 inches the stitch count is 21,777 and at the larger 5 inch its 28,175. Eight colour changes and 93 trims on the 4 inch, this file takes time to run, the machine is stopping and starting through every detail pass. Worth it once its done, the layered tatami and satin fill gives the wings real depth and texture you can actually feel with your fingers.

Hoop polymesh underneath any stretch fabric. On canvas or duck cloth, slide a firm cutaway behind and leave it in after stitching, with 93 trims the fabric needs to stay locked in place the whole way through. Dont rush this on a cheap stabiliser. Pop a water-soluble topping over fluffy fleece so the needle gets through the pile cleanly on the finer detail passes.

The wing spread is wider than it is tall, about 4 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall, so plan placement accordingly. Centred on a jacket pocket or upper chest it sits really well in that horizontal format. I had a customer earlier this year who stitched the 5 inch version onto a denim tote for a nature-themed market stall, and she said people kept picking it up just to look at it up close. Use light or mid-toned base fabric so the blue and navy reads clearly.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Nature-themed tote bag or book bag front panel patchThe realistic detail reads well on medium-weight canvas tote bags, the 4 inch fits a standard front pocket width.
  • Jacket back or sleeve patch for butterfly collectorsAt 4 to 5 inches the wing spread suits jacket sleeve placement and the 9 colours make it a genuine statement patch.
  • Framed hoop art or wall hanging in a nature bedroom themeMounted in a hoop on linen or cotton muslin this works as standalone wall art, the detail level justifies framing it.
  • Kids backpack front panel or school bag accentThe bright colour mix appeals to kids and the design is wide enough to fill a backpack front pocket panel.
  • Quilt block centre motif for butterfly-themed quiltsEach wing segment works as its own quilt block element, the colours complement floral and nature quilt palettes.
  • Cushion or pillow cover accent for nature-inspired roomsAt 5 inches on a cushion cover the wing texture really shows, the tatami fill catches light differently to plain satin.
  • Denim jacket upper chest or collar area placementThe landscape orientation suits a jacket upper chest perfectly, sitting horizontal above a breast pocket.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
