Mocked up this colorful christmas lights tree back in december when a bunch of customers were asking for something with actual colour on it, 6 thread colours, not just the usual single green triangle tree. The whole shape is built from string lights only, no trunk fill, no outline, just rows of lit bulbs in red, green, blue, yellow, orange and violet looping across to form the tree. Looks especially sharp stitched on a navy sweatshirt because the dark background makes all 6 colours pop like they really are lit up. I ran the 7.5 chest on 3 colours and nine sizes before landing on the final stitch order and the bulb satin columns needed a lil underlay pass first or they lifted at the tips.

Youll want a cutaway stabiliser with this one, heavy side, because theres alot going on across 6 thread passes and the density hits 237 stitches per square centimetre at the larger sizes. Hooped tight, it runs clean in all 6 sizes from 2.5 inches 7.5 in across wide. The total stitch count jumps from 3,428 at the smallest to 10,756 at the full size, so budget the machine time accordingly. Digitised in professional digitising software with directional satin on each bulb cap so they dont lay flat, they curve slightly, which is what gives it that rounded-bulb feel.

Stitch this onto kids holiday pyjamas, school fair tote bags, or a fleece beanie for a quick gift. One customer ran the 4-inch on a canvas lunch bag last christmas season and it sold out at her school craft table before noon. Pop the biggest hoop version on a crew-neck sweatshirt front and the colour spread across the chest is something else. Use a topping on anything with texture, fleece, minky, terry, or the satin caps on the bulbs will sink.
