The lion sits nice and calm while his mane does all the talking. Each section of fur is its own flat block of colour: cobalt blue on one side, hot magenta cutting through the centre, sky blue at the top, coral orange and mint green filling the outer fringe strands. Nine colours across the whole design and they dont blend into each other at all, each zone stays clean and hard-edged. The body itself is white with black outlines so the mane is what carries all the colour and it seriously pops against that clean base.

The body proportions are kinda compact and cartoony, the paws planted neatly in front, the tail wrapping around one side. Its not a fierce roaring lion, its more like a confident sitting-pretty lion that knows its the best-looking thing in the room. The face has simple cartoon features and the eyes are forward-facing and friendly. Works for kids and adults equally well, honestly.

I had a kids book illustrator reach out last year after stitching this for a series of safari-themed nursery prints. She ended up customising 5 fabric panels in different colourways for a childs room. The design works kinda perfectly for that because you can swap which thread colours go in which zones and get a totally different look. I get messages from school art teachers about this one too, usually wanting it on classroom banners or project tote bags.

Stitch on white cotton or cream canvas for full impact. The 9 thread colours need a pale ground or the magentas and blues start to look muddy. Use the 7.5-inch on a nursery wall hoop or kids hoodie back. The smaller 3.5-inch fits on a pocket or bib without losing the detail. Avoid patterned fabrics because the mane zones need clean space around em to read.

Digitising kept the colour changes to 8 stops so your machine isnt stopping every few seconds. Cutaway stabiliser under cotton or jersey, and keep tension consistent through the long flat fill sections. Reach out to me if you want advice on thread brand substitutes for any of the nine colours and Ill point you in the right direction.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Nursery wall hoops for safari-themed roomsHoop the 7.5-inch in a round 8-inch frame and hang it above a nursery cot as the centrepiece of a safari wall gallery.
  • Kids tee shirts and onesiesStitch a 4.5-in build on a white cotton onesie bodysuit and the bright mane colours show up beautifully on a baby.
  • School classroom banners and project bagsPop it on a kraft canvas tote for a school art room supply bag. Kids love the rainbow mane and stop to point at it.
  • Canvas tote bags with a pop-art vibeEmbroider centred on a tote face for a pop-art gift shop or craft market stall. The flat colour style photographs well.
  • Kids book illustration fabric printsOne customer used the 6.5-inch on cream cotton panels for a set of framed safari prints in a childs bedroom last year.
  • Birthday party tees for lion or safari themesStitch on a white tee for a kids zoo birthday or safari party theme. The bold mane reads from across the room.
  • Cotton pillow covers for childrens bedroomsEmbroider on a white cotton pillowcase for a childs bed. Pairs well with other jungle animal designs in the same block-colour style.
  • Fabric panels for quilts or patchwork projectsUse the mid-size on individual quilt squares and alternate different background fabrics for a colourful nursery quilt.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
