Stitched this one so the two dolphins form a heart shape when you step back, their bodies arch up symmetrically from the base and meet at the top. Its not obvious at first glance, then it clicks. Below them theres a cluster of curling scroll flourishes that anchor the whole thing and stop it from looking like it's just floating on the fabric. Two colours only, solid black for the bodies and outlines, white for the highlight details on the belly. Simple but it reads really well from a distance.
A friend of mine embroiders beach-themed items for a local gift shop and she told me last month this is her fastest-selling dolphin design by a lot. I think its because it works for so many different people, you can read it as a love design or just as two dolphins, and neither reading is wrong. Five sizes from 2 inches up to 6 inches, so you've got options from a small pocket accent to a proper centrepiece on a beach bag or towel. Stitch it on light blue or white cotton and the black outline looks sharp. Use a topping on terry cloth so the detail doesnt sink in.
