Knocked out this dolphin scene as a proper 3-part composition: sun along the top, dolphin leaping through the middle, two wavy lines at the bottom for the ocean surface. None of the elements are filled in, its all satin outline work so theres this light, graphic quality to it. The sun is a semicircle sitting at the top with spike rays fanning out, the dolphin arcs up through the centre with a beak nose and a split tail, and the wave lines below use those classic S-curve satin columns.

So this one only uses 3 colours: a warm bright yellow for the entire sun and rays, cobalt blue for the dolphin body and tail, and teal for the two wave stripes. Density is really low at 214 stitches per square inch, which means even the largest file at 4.52 by 7.01 inches only hits about 6,800 stitches total. Stitches out in 10 minutes or less on most machines.

Last july a customer grabbed the 3-inch version for a batch of kids swim bags she was making as end-of-summer camp gifts. She stitched on pale blue canvas and said the cobalt dolphin against the sky blue fabric looked like something from a surf shop. Thats exactly the vibe I was going for when I drew this up. The line art holds well even at the tiny 1.3-inch width because theres no dense fill to compress or blur at small scale.

Use a light tearaway stabiliser for stable wovens, or a light cutaway if youre putting it on anything with stretch. Hoop snugly and run a slow speed pass on the first colour to check placement before committing to the full run. Medium woven cotton is the sweet spot fabric, avoid very loose weave or the satin outlines will sink into the threads.

Six sizes in total, smallest at 1.3 inches wide and largest at 4.52. Scale up to the 4-inch for a tote bag front or a canvas pencil case. Drop me a message through the order page if the stitching is skipping on your fabric and Ill help you troubleshoot it.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Kids beach hats and swim capsPut the 2-inch version on a structured kids beach hat, the bold yellow sun reads well even from a distance
  • Ocean-themed tote bagsScale up to the 4-inch for a tote bag front panel, one customer did this on a navy canvas bag and it looked sharp
  • Summer camp T-shirt chest pocketThe chest pocket size works perfectly for summer camp shirts where you want something fun but not too busy
  • Coastal nursery pillow coverStitch the medium version on a white or pale blue pillow for a coastal nursery, the 3 colours keep it calm and simple
  • Canvas pencil case or zip pouchA a chest 3-in on canvas pencil case or flat zip pouch gives a quick personalised summer gift
  • Patch fabric for iron-on badgesAt the smallest 1.3-inch size it works well on patch fabric that can then be ironed or sewn onto jackets or bags

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
