I get messages about this elegant butterfly heart design more than almost any other I stock. Last valentine season I had customers ordering it in batches of three and four for gift sets. Theres something about it that people respond to, probably because its simple at a glance but holds up well the closer you look. The whole thing is done in a single thread colour, solid black, so the only thing giving it shape is the way roughly 30 butterfly silhouettes cluster together until their outer edges form a clear heart.

Each butterfly is a filled silhouette, wings open, but they point in different directions and vary in size from small to medium-large, so it reads as natural movement rather than a repeating pattern. At a few feet away you see the heart. Up close you start picking out individual wings. its one of those builds that works on a plain white fabric where the contrast does all the heavy lifting, or on a light-coloured canvas where the black thread makes the heart pop without needing any colour work at all.

Single colour means fast hoop time and no colour-change stops. Hoop a firm cutaway since the fill density is 489 stitches per square centimetre and you dont want any fabric shifting under the needle path between butterflies. Use an underlay pass if your machine programme allows it, particularly on looser weaves like linen or denim, to lock the fabric before the top fill stitches land. Largest size is 6.15 inches wide at 21,068 stitches. Smallest is 3.52 inches at 10,461 stitches. Stitch it and text me if anything looks off.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Valentine tote bags and gift pouches in white or cream canvasWhite canvas totes show this off the most, the black on white contrast makes the heart readable from across a room.
  • Throw pillow fronts in plain linen or cotton drillA customer used the 6-inch piece on a natural linen pillow front for a wedding gift set last spring.
  • Wedding or bridal tote bags as guest favoursWhite cotton bridal totes at the 4-inch size are a popular favour option for engagement party bags.
  • Quilt blocks and fabric panels for memory quiltsOn a quilt block, the clean silhouette edges applique neatly without any floating threads at the butterfly tips.
  • Hooped wall art in a 7-inch frame on white linenA 7-inch hoop on stretched white linen makes this a clean minimal piece for a bedroom or reading room wall.

Behind every stitch

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
