This is a circular blackwork design and the butterfly is the whole point of it. Big swallowtail, wings spread wide, sitting dead centre. The upper wings have tight directional hatching inside them so theres real depth there. And the lower wings flare out with those long elegant swallowtail points touching the flower wreath on both sides. Its one colour, all black, but the density variation makes it look like three or four.

The botanical ring around it is thick. Dahlias, open-faced daisies, spiral rosette blooms, fern-type leaves, thin trailing stems. Some flowers are fully outlined and open, some are packed tight with satin fill. Wilcom did the digitising on this and you can tell because the transitions between the open florals and the dense wing fill dont fight each other. The outer ring itself is a clean ruled line that frames the whole thing without being heavy.

I get messages about this one from boutique owners who stock hand-finished tote bags, also from wedding stationers who embroider muslin ceremony favour bags. Last autumn a florist ordered it on cream linen gift bags for a market stall and sent photos. The biggest size at 9.76 inches wide is a full hoop piece on its own, gorgeous in a 10-inch frame on cream linen hung on a wall. And the 4.88-inch version fits a standard tote pocket without any drama.

Best on cream, ivory or white fabric where the black threadwork reads clean. Skip dark grounds here, the open whitework sections in the flower outlines disappear on navy or charcoal. Use a medium tearaway stabiliser on woven linen or cotton twill, and switch to cutaway if youre putting the large size on anything remotely stretchy. The swallowtail wing fill runs 39k stitches at the top size so hoop tension matters.

Start with a slow first pass through the butterfly body centre if your machine isnt used to dense underlay. But its a single colour change which means no stopping, no rethreading, just let it run. Hit me up if you get any puckering on the outer border line and ill walk you through a stabiliser fix.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Framed linen wall hoop for living room or bedroomHoop the 10-inch size in a round frame on cream linen and hang it as a botanical wall piece, no extra art needed.
  • Boutique canvas tote bags with botanical themeStitch the 5-inch size on a natural canvas tote for boutique shop packaging that looks genuinely hand-crafted.
  • Wedding muslin favour bagsEmbroider the small version onto muslin drawstring bags for wedding favour sets, 20 or 30 at a time stitches up fast.
  • Cushion covers for cottage-style decorPop it centred on a cream or ivory cushion cover for a country-house living room feel that goes with almost anything.
  • Denim jacket back panel statement pieceRun the largest size across a denim jacket back panel and fill the whole hoop, the circle shape works perfectly for it.
  • Embroidered patch for fiber artist displaysStitch onto felt and back with iron-on for a removable patch that fiber artists can pin to display boards.
  • Tablecloth centre motif on cream linenCentre the 8-inch version on a cream linen tablecloth for a botanical table setting that photographs well.
  • Nature journaling notebook coversEmbroider the small size onto a hardcover notebook muslin wrap for a gift that a nature journaler will actually use.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
