Came up with this design trying to find the middle ground between halloween spooky and pretty botanical, and I think it landed in a good spot. The ghost is a white shape rising up through the centre, just a simple classic form with those round black eyes, but its completely buried in the scene around it. Two orange jack-o-lanterns sit at the base grinning up, and wrapping everything are tall black botanical stems with sunflower-style blooms and leaf sprays going in every direction. Really really busy in a good way, the kind of piece that rewards you the longer you look at it.
3 colours, orange, white and black, and 156 trims at the smallest 3.5 inch size going up to 169 trims at the 5.5 inch size. Stitch count runs from 18,844 up to 42,206 across 5 sizes, so its a dense complex hoop. The botanicals are done with directional fill and satin column work on the stems, which is what gives em that botanical illustration feel rather than a flat cartoon.
I got a message last october from a customer who ran it on the back of a black denim jacket, the white ghost glowing out against the dark fabric with the orange pumpkins on either side. She said it was the most complimented thing she wore that halloween. Thats genuinely what I love to hear.
Use a cutaway stabiliser, the stitch density is 816 and the coverage is high. Hoop on cotton, canvas, or denim and pick a size 90/14 needle for the denser sections. Avoid lightweight fabrics for the bigger sizes, the high stitch count needs something with body to hold everything flat. Run a test swatch first to check the white thread density on dark fabrics. Dont skip that step with 42k stitches on the large size.
