Gonna be honest, this was a bit of a wild idea but it came together really well. Sixteen colours in a 3.51 inch frame is kinda a lot, and the density clocks in at 450, which is the highest in this group. But the chicken feather texture is kinda the whole point, I used layered directional satin in Wilcom to build up the fluffy body in passes, lighter shades first as underlay, then the mid tone, then the highlight satin lines on top. Really really gives it that three-dimensional feather look that customers specifically mention when they leave reviews, and its honestly why I kept the colour count high instead of simplifying it down.
I had a customer order this one last october for farmhouse-style halloween aprons she was selling at a craft fair. She used it on black denim aprons and said the chicken detail came out sharper than shed expected at that stitch density. Customising the thread colours is doable, the white and cream feather tones could shift warm or cool depending on your thread brand. Pair with a heavy cutaway stabiliser because at 450 density on anything less the fabric'll pull. Digitising this took longer than most because the feather layers needed multiple passes to build up properly without the topping compressing the pile.
Use it on aprons, tote bags, sweatshirts, or pillow covers. The landscape shape sits well in a bag pocket band or as a left chest on a sweatshirt. Avoid thin quilting cotton at density 450, go for canvas, denim, or medium-weight twill for the cleanest stitch finish. For terry or fleece add a water-soluble topping before you hoop so the feather detail doesnt sink.
