The gnome is barely taller than his pumpkin stack. Thats the whole gag and it works every time. Hes got a big red polka-dot mushroom hat, long fluffy white beard hiding everything below his round lil nose, and hes just standing there next to 3 carved jack-o-lanterns piled on top of each other, each with a different triangle-eye expression. Bare twig branches stick out from either side like the designers wanted some spooky atmosphere without losing the cute.

15 colours in this one, and Wilcom did a lot of the heavy lifting on the pumpkin texture. Theres a cross-hatched satin fill on the amber orange sections that gives the gourds that slightly dimensional look, not flat like a clip art print. The red hat has dense directional stitching with the black dot spots done as clean satin columns. Density runs high, the largest 7.01-inch size comes in at 74,517 stitches total, so hooping snug and going at moderate speed is worth it.

I get messages about the gnome-pumpkin design every september, people stocking up before halloween season. One buyer reached out last october asking whether it would work on a fleece table runner. I told her go for it with a topping layer of water-soluble film over the fleece to stop the stitches sinking into the pile. She came back a week later saying it worked and she ended up stitching 4 of them across a long harvest cloth. Alot of thread but the result sounded brilliant.

Pop this on cotton twill, canvas, or natural linen. Cream and off-white grounds let the orange pumpkins and red hat really come out. Avoid dark navy or black base fabric here because the black outline stitching disappears and the design loses definition. Use firm cutaway stabiliser on all sizes, tearaway isnt enough at this stitch count. Drop me a message if your machine struggles on the fill sections and Ill walk you through the settings.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • halloween tote bags and trick-or-treat sacksDrop the 5-inch size on a natural canvas tote for a halloween treat bag that looks way more considered than a shop-bought one
  • fall table runner and kitchen towel decorRun the 4-inch size along the end of a cream linen table runner for a fall tablescape that works from october right through harvest season
  • kids halloween costume shirt or hoodieStitch the medium size on the front of a kids charcoal hoodie and pair it with orange jeans for a costume that doesnt need a bag over the head
  • seasonal throw pillow coverEmbroider the 5-inch version centred on a cream pillow cover for a seasonal cushion you wont mind leaving out all of october
  • october wall hoop framed displayHoop the 6-inch size in a large round frame with a dark charcoal fabric backing for a wall piece that reads from across the room
  • denim jacket pocket or sleeve patchPop the 3.5-inch size on the chest pocket of a denim jacket for a subtle halloween nod without the full costume energy
  • holiday gift wrap fabric pouchUse the 3.51-inch size on a small muslin drawstring pouch as a candy bag or small gift wrap for halloween treats

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
