This is a full skeleton built in the mermaid shape. The skull has the proper features -- empty eye sockets, nose cavity, teeth -- and long wild black hair fans out to the side. The torso shows ribs and a visible spine, the arms end in bone hands, and the whole lower body is a proper fish skeleton tail that fans out at the bottom into a wide fin. A couple of small fishbone silhouettes float beside her. All of it in a single black thread, pure linework, no fills.
Just 1 colour, 0 colour changes. Stitch counts go from 7,134 at the smallest 2.23-by-3.51-inch size to 14,780 at the largest 3.5-by-7.51-inch version -- its lighter than it looks because the design is mostly outline paths. 5 sizes total. Wilcom EmbroideryStudio digitised it and the bone detail is genuinely good, especially the ribcage and the spine curve.
Single-colour designs like this one are great because you pick your thread. Black on white is the obvious call but dark grey on cream, white on black fabric, even copper on dark canvas all work. This halloween mashup type hits different depending on where you put it. Ideal for Halloween but honestly it looks good year-round on the right item. Use a light cutaway on any stretch fabric and dont skip the topping on velvet or terry cloth. Pick copper or dark teal thread for the version that goes on black canvas, it reads way better than straight black-on-black. My friend asked me last halloween if Id make her one on a tote bag and it genuinely turned into my most requested colourway. People who arent even into Halloween end up buying this one for gothic fashion year-round, which isnt suprising once you see it stitched.
What people are using this design for
A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.
- Halloween tote bags with a dark aestheticThe tall narrow mermaid shape fits a tote handle panel or a bag front gusset really well.
- Hoodie sleeves or back panels for gothic fashionOn a hoodie sleeve in black thread it reads like a tattoo flash design -- very wearable outside Halloween.
- Tee shirts for ocean and mermaid enthusiastsMermaid fans stitch this one on tee shirts as a year-round dark fantasy piece, not just for October.
- Framed hoop art in black thread on white linenBlack thread on white linen in a round hoop is a go-to display setup -- looks like framed line art.
- Patch badges for cosplay or Halloween costumesAt the 2.23-inch width its a patch-sized badge that works on leather or canvas without bulk.
- Embroidered journal or sketchbook coversOn a fabric journal cover the skeleton mermaid gives it a really distinct personality.
- Halloween home decor pillows with a dark whimsical themeDark pillow covers in charcoal or black take this design in a way that feels intentional, not cheap.

About the artist
Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site
Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.
That's the joy I work for.
The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
