The rose and the heart are one shape here. The outer silhouette is a clear heart but the whole interior is filled with rose petals, a tight spiral centre bud with layered petals fanning outward in every direction. Red satin columns do the petal outlines and the deep red fill between them, and then cream or pale pink sits in the highlighted areas between petals to give it that three-dimensional lifted look. Its genuinely one of the more complex floral digitisations I have.

3 colours, 965 density, which means the thread coverage is really dense and rich, probably the highest-density item in the valentine range. At the largest 7.5 inch size the stitch count hits 47,575. Thats a substantial run time, maybe 25-30 minutes on a mid-speed machine. At the smallest 3.5 inch size its 15,890 stitches which is still detailed. Plan your stabilising carefully. Use a good quality cutaway on woven cotton for the larger sizes, not tearaway, the density will stress the fabric. Back with a second layer of cutaway if youre on anything looser than a medium-weight twill.

I made this one because I saw a lot of heart designs out there that were just solid fill or basic outlines. I wanted something that felt like a real botanical illustration but also read as a heart from across the room. My wife ordered a cushion cover with this last February and the detail came out really well on cream linen fabric. The colours were warm and true to the design.

Stitch slowly on the centre bud section, thats the densest point. Use polyester thread for the red tones so the colour doesnt bleed if the item gets washed. Add a water-soluble topping on any fabric with texture or pile. Avoid black fabric here, the cream highlights wont show against it. White, cream, ivory and light grey all work brilliantly.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Valentine's Day cushion covers and pillow casesThe 7.5 inch version centred on a cream linen cushion cover is the most popular use my customers go for.
  • Tote bags for a romantic giftOn a canvas tote, the 5 inch version gives a bold floral-heart that works both for valentine and general gifting.
  • Womens jackets and cardigans with floral detailOn a womens cardigan left chest or sleeve, the 4 inch version sits elegantly without overwhelming the garment.
  • Framed hoop art for bedroom or living roomIn a 10 inch hoop with the 7.5 inch design, the petals fill the frame with enough border space to frame nicely.
  • Quilt centrepieces and large applique blocksAs a quilt centrepiece block, the 6 inch version in a 10 inch block has great proportional balance.
  • Linen table runners for a Valentine's Day tableOn ivory linen table runners, two 5 inch versions spaced symmetrically make a striking valentines table.
  • Custom keepsake gifts for anniversariesFor anniversary keepsakes, stitch the 5 inch version on a blank linen panel, frame it with the recipients name below.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
