The heron stands on a short gnarled branch, that long neck curved into a soft S and the head turned just slightly so you catch the eye in profile. The orange-yellow beak juts forward and the feathers along the neck sit in those loose hanging wisps that real herons get, the kind that flutter in a light breeze. Wilcom ran 12 separate colours through this one and you can feel it in the finished piece. Each zone of the body, the slate blue wing coverts, the dusty mauve breast, the deep navy flight feathers, all get their own directional fill layer.

The plume stitching across the wing area uses long tatami runs with underlay to give the feathers actual depth rather than just flat colour. Stitch count goes from 13,560 at the 3-in baseline size up to 32,905 on the largest 7.5-inch, with 12 colour stops in between. Thats a lot of colour changes for a bird but the difference shows when its finished. The sand-coloured branch perch at the base uses a rough satin column that reads like bark. Genuinely one of the more detailed bird designs Ive built, and the colour changes are worth every one of em.

Bird enthusiasts and coastal home decor people have been buying this one regularly. A customer in australia emailed me last month saying she stitched the 7-inch on a linen cushion for her beach house lounge and it looked like a museum print. She used a cream linen ground and matched the thread colours perfectly from the worksheet colour codes.

Use white, cream, or natural linen for best results. Pale grey works aswell. Skip any fabric with a busy texture because 12 colours need a clean quiet background to show properly. Hoop it firm and keep the stabiliser generous, theres a lot of detail here that cant afford fabric movement mid-run. Email me if any of the 12 colour stops give trouble and Ill walk you through the sequence.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
