Three herons standing in a row and the colours on this one are unusual. The middle bird is a tall teal blue adult, the one on the right is a peach pink adult and the lil chick out front is a soft cream colour with a fluffy crest. So instead of doing them all the same shade I went for the kind of mismatched flock you sometimes spot near the tide line.
The feathers are stitched directional so each wing has that layered look, you can see the lines fanning down the back. Beaks are pale pink, eyes are tiny black satin dots and the wing tips drop down into pure black. Each bird is standing on a little oval of grey reflection so they read as wading rather than just floating.
I get messages from customers doing coastal home decor and bird watching gifts, and this trio fits that brief well. But it also realy works for nursery pieces if your doing a soft natural palette nursery rather than the standard pastel route. Last christmas one customer sent me a photo of it stitched centre back on a linen tote.
Comes in 9 sizes from 3.4 by 3.5 inches up to 7.3 by 7.5 inches. Stitch counts run 19,890 to 52,833 across the range so the bigger sizes are dense, plan for atleast 40 minutes on the largest. 12 colour changes total which honestly isnt as bad as it sounds since the palette repeats across all three birds.
Best on woven fabric like linen, cotton canvas or twill. Use a medium weight cutaway stabiliser if youre stitching the largest size since the density gets up to 965 stitches per square inch in the wing sections. Skip thin jersey unless your hooping with a layer of mesh wash underneath. Holler if PES wont open on yer machine and ill rework the file from the Wilcom source.
What people are using this design for
A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.
- Coastal cottage cushion coversA medium size centred on a natural linen cushion brings calm coastal energy without going full nautical.
- Bird watcher tote bagsStitched on a heavy cotton tote it makes a thoughtful gift for a bird watching mum who already has mugs.
- Linen tea towel statementPop a smaller size on the corner of a cream linen tea towel as a kitchen accent without trying too hard.
- Nature themed nursery quiltThe cream chick alone or the full trio on a nursery quilt panel ties in with greens and warm naturals nicely.
- Naturalist journal coverOn the front of a fabric covered journal it suits naturalists or anyone who keeps a bird sighting notebook.
- Marsh themed wall hoop artStretch the largest size in a 9 inch wooden hoop and hang in a hallway for instant marsh themed wall art.
- Retirement gift pillowA medium size on a soft cotton pillow case makes a personal retirement gift for a colleague who loves birding.
- Cabin throw blanket detailUse a larger size on a wool throw blanket so the herons read clearly when its folded over a chair.

About the artist
Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site
Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.
That's the joy I work for.
The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
