I added the decorative border to this one back in june after a customer asked if there was a version with more of a finished gift-tag feel, and using a satin scroll surround turned out to be exactly right. Nine colours lets the composition split into real sections, the tail scales get their own teal and seafoam tones, the outer border gets the deeper navy, and the skin and hair tones sit warm in between. Built the surround as a proper satin border rather than an outline-only, so it holds its weight visually even at 3.5 inches.

Density sits at 67, which is medium for this level of detail. The scale texture on the tail is done with a short directional satin that gives a bit of a shimmer effect when the light hits it. For that to show properly you want a stable woven base, quilting cotton, canvas, denim, linen all work well. Avoid hooping stretch knits directly; the underlay isnt optimised for that and youll get some drag on the scale sections. If you must stitch onto jersey, use a firm cutaway and consider a topping layer. Stitch the border sections last for the cleanest overlapping satin edges.

Nine sizes from 3.5 to 7.5 inches wide, 1,056 to 24,484 stitches. The 5-in build for a natural linen tote bag is probably the most popular use I hear about. Place it centred on the front panel and the scroll border gives it a finished, almost monogrammed feel. Pair it with a solid colour tote and keep the rest of the bag plain to let it breathe. Use the 3.5-in build for a small drawstring bag for party favours and it stitches quickly in batches on cotton.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Girls tee shirt left chest logoGirls tee chest logo in jersey knit; ballpoint needle, cutaway backing, the scale border holds up on stretch without distortion.
  • Linen tote bag front panelNatural linen tote front where the scroll surround gives it a finished monogrammed feel without actually needing monogram work.
  • Mermaid birthday party favour bagBirthday party favour bags in batches; cotton drawstring, tearaway, each one stitches in a few minutes once you're set up.
  • Girls bedroom pillow cover centreCotton twill pillow cover centred motif for a girls bedroom that has a coastal or ocean theme going on.
  • Canvas zip pouch decorationCanvas zip pouch for a mermaid-fan gift, the compact scroll border fits the pouch face without crowding the zip line.
  • Beach cover-up back embroideryCotton beach cover-up back panel; cutaway handles the loose open weave better than tearaway for a wearable result.
  • Nursery wall art hoop displayLinen in a wide hoop for a coastal nursery wall art piece, the kind of thing that works equally in a beach house bedroom.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
