Best on mid-weight wovens. A charcoal or navy thread on a cream linen or grey canvas shirt is a lil bit stunning. Or flip it, use a cream or white thread on a dark navy fleece jacket. Hoop with medium cutaway on canvas, tear-away on firm poplin shirts. Skip jersey and stretch fabrics here because the wide horizontal fill can distort on stretch and that really kills the clean ridge line.
