Heres the mushroom house fairy cottage and its straight out of a picture book. A stacked tower of plump toadstool mushrooms forms the cottage. Three big purple caps stack on top of each other with cream spots dotted across the curved tops. The middle level holds a square window with cross-pane lines, and the bottom mushroom has a small arched door in tan with a tiny round handle. Sage grass grows round the base, and a cluster of lil baby mushrooms grow up from the lawn beside the door.

Six thread changes carry the cottage. Lavender holds the lighter cap shading, deep plum does the deeper hatched shadows on the underside of each cap, pale mauve fills the body of each toadstool stem. Cream spots dot the caps, sage green covers the grass blades and tan picks out the door panel. Theres no solid fills anywhere, the entire cottage is built from cross-hatched line work that gives it that drawn-pen storybook page feel.

I been digitising fantasy nursery pieces for a couple years now. My niece has been into fairy cottages since last halloween when she dressed as a forest sprite for trick-or-treat night. Last spring I made her a mushroom house hoop for her bunk-bed wall and she sent a photo a week later, the cottage taped above her reading lamp.

Pick a soft cloth. Cream, white, light pink or pale mint cotton because the lavender and plum tones need a calm light backdrop, the hatched shading reads cleanest on smooth weave. Stay off forest green, indigo or rust, the lavender vanishes and youll wash out that whole picture-book softness. Pop it onto a quilting cotton or muslin baby blanket, the fine cross-hatch lines need stable woven cloth.

Density runs about 14k stitches on the smallest hoop and 38k on the largest. Use a light cutaway stabiliser, hoop firm and run the head gentle over the cap hatching. Theres no shortcut here. The cross-line shading depends on calm tension, rushed runs cause the lines to bunch and you lose the storybook feel. Skip glittery threads here, the sheen fights the soft hatched linework. Send a chat note if a panel runs too tight on jersey.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
