The whale is mid-breach here, body arching out of the water with the characteristic humpback silhouette and a water splash fanning out underneath and around it. The flukes are up, the head is angled downward, the whole thing captures that moment right as the whale breaks the surface. Its one of those illustrations that instantly reads ocean and beach without needing any text or context around it.
Five colours only, which keeps the thread changes manageable. The whale body is deep navy, the splash water is in lighter teal, white foam highlights sit at the splash peaks, the belly has a soft grey underside. Stitch count starts at 10,997 for the smallest 3.06 by 3.5 inch version and the largest 6.56 by 7.5 inch version hits 28,331 stitches. Density of 576 means its a medium-weight stitch load, comfortable for most machines and doesnt demand a premium cutaway.
Nine sizes and I sell this one alot for coastal nurseries and beach house decor. A customer in March sent me pictures of a set of whale hoops she stitched for her beach rental cottage and it looked genuinely beautiful on natural linen, the navy on cream really pops. I cant think of a better design for that coastal cottage aesthetic honestly.
Use tearaway stabiliser on woven fabrics like cotton, linen, canvas and denim. Switch to cutaway for any stretch knit. The design stitches cleanly on waffle cotton, jersey, or terry cloth aswell. Pair the navy whale body with a cream, white, sand, or pale aqua base colour for the best result, dont go too dark or the teal splash disappears.
Works on kids room items, beach totes, towels, coastal cushions, nautical-themed apparel. The splash element adds movement that makes even the flat product image look lively.
