And thats the thing about this butterfly, its not just an outline. The whole wing surface has content packed into every inch of it. Swirls inside swirls. Scroll shapes that curve outward and back in. Circular eye-spots near the top corners that look like someone borrowed them from a peacock feather. Those black dot clusters along the outer wing edges give it just enough contrast to stop the gold from going flat.

The swallowtail shape separates it from a generic butterfly. Lower wings have those characteristic curved extensions at the corners that trail downward and then loop back up into little curlicue finishes. Its a very specific silhouette and it reads clearly even at the smallest hoop size. Body runs down the centre with a neat segmented look and the antennae spread out at the top in that classic V.

Two colours sounds simple but the stitch count tells you otherwise. At the 7-inch hoop youre looking at nearly 78k stitches, and at the 5-inch its almost 48k, so this is very much a complex piece. Last spring one customer hooped the 6-inch hoop onto a deep teal velvet evening bag and the gold thread had that almost metallic quality against the pile fabric, which looked genuinely expensive.

Stitch it on cream or pale gold fabric and the orange-gold thread reads warm and rich. Try it on black fabric instead and the whole thing flips to look like antique filigree jewellery. Use a medium to heavy cutaway stabiliser on the back. Skip stretch fabrics and thin jersey entirely, the dense underlay needs a stable woven base. Give your machine a slow first run through, the trims are frequent and rushing them leads to thread nests.

Wilcom EmbroideryStudio digitising means the underlay handling runs reliably across all those curved fill areas. Comes in four hoop sizes from 5 to 8 inches. Holler if anything goes sideways on the first run and Ill sort it out same day.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Tote bags and fabric pursesStitch the 5-inch on a canvas tote and the orange-gold filigree gives a plain bag a high-end boutique look
  • Denim jackets and jean pocketsWorks beautifully on the back of a denim jacket where the dense gold thread pops against the blue fabric
  • Velvet and luxury evening clutchesThe 6-inch on velvet or satin clutch fabric looks almost like embossed metalwork, very formal and polished
  • Throw pillow covers in neutral tonesCentre it on a cream or white throw pillow cover for a nature-inspired decor piece that doesnt feel kitschy
  • Wall hoop art framed piecesHoop the 7-inch in a wooden frame with raw edges left showing for a wall art piece with real visual weight
  • Wedding and bridal accessoriesThe symmetrical shape and jewellery-like quality makes it a go-to for bridal totes, sashes, or favour bags
  • Nature and garden-themed gift itemsPairs well with botanical and insect theme collections for gift sets, fabric bookmarks, or framed embroidery gifts

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
