Just the eyes and top of the head peeping over the edge, that classic peekaboo moment frozen in embroidery. The penguin body is mostly hidden below the frame, which makes the composition read as a surprise reveal rather than a full portrait, and thats what gives it its charm. Big round eyes with white highlight dots sit just above the ledge line, with the small orange beak beneath them and a hint of a coloured scarf around the neck. Started this in Wilcom, 9 colour changes, and the black and white body sections use clean satin directional stitching to keep the penguin markings crisp at small sizes too.

9 sizes, but this design is quite wide relative to its height because of the peekaboo framing. Width spanning 3.5 inches to 7.5, height only goes from 2.04 to 4.38 inches, so its a landscape-ish rectangle shape. Stitches open at 13,168 on the small size and climb to 35,083 at full scale. Density at 1,068 means the coverage is full and the colours hold well on medium-weight fabric. A customer who runs a newborn gifting shop texted me last month saying she uses a 4 size onto muslin swaddle corners and it photographs beautifully for product listings. Its one of those designs that reads as expensive even at a mid-range price point.

Hoop a soft cutaway stabiliser under knit baby fabric like jersey interlock so the density doesnt create pulling across the wide stretch direction. For woven cotton and muslin use a medium tearaway and the backing peels clean without distorting the fine beak or eye details. Press wash-away film on top of waffle towels or terry cloth before the face detail stitches so the highlights dont sink into the pile. Stick to white, pale blue, grey, or mint backgrounds so the black penguin body reads clearly. Text me if the file doesnt work on your machine and Ill send a replacement right away.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Baby nursery onesies, sleep sacks, and bodysuitsThe 3.5-inch version on an onesie chest has enough detail to read clearly without overwhelming the tiny garment.
  • Newborn gift sets with matching bib and burp clothPair a 4-inch bib version with a matching 3.5-inch burp cloth for a coordinated newborn set.
  • Muslin swaddle blanket corner accentsStitch the 4-inch size on a muslin swaddle corner where the peekaboo frame works naturally at the edge.
  • Baby shower gift bag embellishmentsThe 4-inch version on a small kraft gift bag flap adds a personalised nursery touch to shower gifts.
  • Nursery room hooded towels and washclothsRun the 5-inch size on a hooded towel hood so the penguin peeks out over the top when worn.
  • Cotton pillow covers for a winter or arctic nursery themeThe 6-inch on a small nursery pillow cover in pale blue works well for an arctic or winter baby room.
  • Small zipper pouches and baby keepsake boxesA 3.5-inch piece on a cotton zip pouch makes a sweet baby keepsake storage item.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
