Heres the kawaii baby penguin with the big round eyes that pretty much take up half his face. He stands front on with stubby flippers a bit out, a tiny smile and a little tuft of hair sticking up that gives him alot of personality. The outline is thick black satin so the design holds up at the small 3.5 inch sizes too.

The belly runs a creamy off white with thin shading lines, and two pink blush dots on the cheeks pop nicely without going overboard. I kept the stitch density lower on the white belly so its soft and not too heavy on baby fabric. Bold cartoon outlines do all the heavy lifting, only 2 thread colours total which makes it a quick stitch.

I built this one for the kid friendly tshirt and backpack crowd, not delicate newborn pieces. Last summer a customer ordered 4 of these for her toddlers daycare class, one for each kid, and she sent me photos of every backpack with the penguin chest height and clearly readable. It realy works on canvas lunch totes too because the bold outline reads from a distance.

Stitch on white, mint, pale grey, soft yellow or sky blue cotton tee fabric, fleece, canvas tote material and quilters cotton. The two-colour palette pops on any pale solid. Skip dark navy or black, the black outline disappears into the background. Avoid heavy patterned fabric since the penguin already carries its own bold lines.

Use a medium cutaway stabiliser on knits, double layer if youre stitching the 7.5 inch size on stretch jersey. Pre wash any baby fabric first so it doesnt shrink around the embroidery later. 9 sizes from 3.5 to 7.5 inches, 2 colours, max 20,918 stitches. Run polyester thread so the colours wash up well after every wash cycle.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Toddler tshirts and hoodiesOn a small toddler tee the bold outlined penguin reads clearly even after a few washes.
  • Kids backpack patchesSewn onto the front flap of a kids backpack he becomes a little signature character for school.
  • Lunch box totesA medium size on a canvas lunch tote turns a plain bag into a personal kids accessory.
  • Baby blankets and burp clothsOn a soft cotton burp cloth the cute face peeks out and survives every spill and wash cycle.
  • Nursery wall art hoopsSet inside a 6 inch wooden hoop he doubles as simple nursery wall art that costs almost nothing to frame.
  • Stuffed plush penguin patchesThe smallest size works as a face patch sewn onto the front of a homemade plush penguin or softie.
  • Birthday party tote bagsStitched on a small cotton tote it makes a quick winter themed party favour for kids birthdays.
  • Pyjama pocket accentsA tiny size on the chest pocket of cotton pyjamas adds a sweet detail without overpowering the fabric.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
