The mama penguin is at the back, the biggest of the three, with this big red satin bow sitting right on top of her head and blue anime-style eyes with long lashes. Shes got her wings opened and wrapped loosely around the two baby penguins in front of her. The babies are smaller versions with the same big eyes and orange beak, one on each side, and theyre looking outward like they just spotted something interesting. Small pink and peach flowers at the base. Red outline hearts floating above all of them. Twelve colours, 11 color changes.

At 57k stitches on 7-in jumbo.5-inch size its a substantial piece. The black and white body sections use smooth satin fills with directional shading built in, and the red bow is satin-stitched in two layers which is whats making it look glossy rather than flat. The eye details are the densest section, get those 4 blue highlight circles right and the whole face comes alive. Density is 1163, so use a proper cutaway stabiliser under everything. Nine 3.5 through to top, which is the smallest for bib or pocket placement, full 7.5 reach for large cushions or framed art.

My niece had a penguin-themed nursery and I stitched the 6-inch on a white fleece blanket as a new baby gift last winter. She sent photos and it looked exactly right against the pale grey and white room. Penguin family nursery themes are having a bit of a moment and this one works really well for them. Its also popular for baby shower gifts on muslin swaddles and for kids going through their penguin phase. Theres always a penguin phase.

Stitch on white or very light grey fabric. Cream cotton, white fleece, pale blue jersey, oatmeal linen. The black penguin bodies need a pale ground to read properly. Use firm cutaway underneath, the density will drag light fabric without it. Hoop very tight before you start and ease the speed through the 11 thread swap sequence. Keep your bobbin topped up because its a thread-hungry design.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
