So this is technically listed as a raccoon but its absolutely a kitten. Chubby tabby, sitting square-on, big round eyes, mouth open wide like it just heard something brilliant. The fur's all done in a crosshatch and radial-line technique, 2 colours but the black detail work is so layered it reads as a full tonal drawing. Stripes run down the chest and forehead the way tabby markings actually go, not just parallel lines slapped on.

The Santa hat sits slightly crooked which is the right call. Brim's a fat white satin band, the hat body's a solid red cone with directional fill to suggest it leans a bit left, and theres a fluffy pompom on the end. Red is the only second colour, everythings else black threadwork. About 3 colour changes in practice because the white brim and pompom share the same stop.

Stitch count is 44,512 on the biggest size at 7.39 by 7.51 inches, proper dense at 802 stitches per square inch. Its got proper heft to it. A customer who does pet portrait commissions for a living said it was the most convincing cat expression she'd seen in a digitised piece. She stitched five of them onto stockings for repeat buyers last autumn. Smallest size is 4.44 by 4.51 inches at 25,377 stitches, still detailed enough to read clearly on a bag front.

Use a medium cutaway and dont skimp on it, the density'll drag thin fabric down. Hoop tightly, preferably a wooden hoop with a screw for extra grip. Firm cotton canvas, thick fleece, heavy twill or a structured tote all take it well. Avoid jersey and thin knits, the crosshatch density'll pucker badly. Slow down to about 700 SPM on the fine fur sections. Check the red thread tension before the hat stitches start, a slightly loose bobbin will ghost red shadow into the brim trim area.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Sweatshirt for a cat lover's December giftIron a piece of cutaway to the back of a sweatshirt, hoop it, stitch the 6-inch, and wrap it for a cat-lover who gets a gift every year and always says they have everything
  • Large canvas tote for the office gift swapStitch the large size centred on a canvas tote with leather handles and drop it into an office gift swap, nobody else will have anything close
  • Stockings personalised for a pet-obsessed householdEmbroider the 5-inch onto the front panel of a fabric stocking and hang it alongside the real ones on the mantle for the family cat
  • Advent calendar fabric panelMake a set of 24 small fabric squares, stitch this on one of them, and sew them into a fabric advent calendar the kids use every year
  • Wall hanging on cotton canvasStretch a piece of thick cotton canvas in a 10-inch hoop, stitch the largest size, and hang it on a wall as seasonal decor that doesnt need a frame
  • Patch for a kid's backpackBack a small piece with iron-on adhesive, trim close around the outline, and press it onto a kid's backpack before the school run
  • Embroidered cushion for a cat-themed living roomCentre the 6-inch on a dark charcoal cushion cover and toss it on the sofa as a wink to the actual cat who already owns that spot

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
