Six bands of colour arch over two puffy blue clouds, the classic rainbow shape but stitched out properly with clean layered satin fills. The outer band is red, then it goes yellow, a pale celadon green, aqua, a deep navy strip near the inside, and a lighter sky blue completes the arc. Wide and a bit flat, more landscape than square. The two clouds sit at the base on either side, round and satin-filled, very nursery-appropriate without being too babyish. Run it at about 70 percent speed on any textured or waffle-knit nursery fabric, thats usually all you need to stop skipped stitches.

Stitch the 6-in run on a onesie chest, a matching 3 inch on a bib and a 2 inch on the corner of a burp cloth for a gift set that looks like it came from a boutique. Last month I saw someone in a sewing group who'd done exactly that on white waffle-knit and it looked absolutely gorgeous. Dont overthink the colour choices for the fabric base, white and cream both work brilliantly with this palette.
