The whole scene fits inside a loose circular boundary, which gives it that vintage badge feel without using an actual border ring. Dead centre at the water line sits the sailboat, just a clean black silhouette with one tall main sail and a jib, hull reflected in the water below as a short dark mirror shape. Behind it a massive wave curls upward and to the left in that classic breaking-swell arc. The wave is built from layered fills in deep blue, cobalt and teal, with white foam lines running along the crest and a few white splash marks at the base where it hits the calmer water.

Above the wave a bank of clouds billows in the upper arc of the circle, white and greige, heavy enough to add drama but not so dark that they flatten the sky. Right at the horizon behind the mast, a round yellow-lime sun disc sits low and bright, the only warm colour in the whole design, so it pulls your eye immediately. Seven colours altogether, and theyre layered so the depth reads even on the smallest size. Its the kind of nautical illustration that doesnt look mass-produced, and thats why I keep selling it to sailing clubs and maritime gift makers.

Sizes run from 3.5 by 3.41 inches up to 7.5 by 7.31 inches, five options, and stitch counts go from 15k to 48k. Dense at 883 stitches per square inch on the larger sizes, so use a firm medium cutaway on wovens. For denim or canvas the cutaway handles it fine, for knit fabric add a light topping so the circular edge stays crisp. Hoop tight, this one has a lot of directional fill changes and a loose hoop will show registration drift on those wave layers. Dont rush the satin wave sections either, run at a steady 650 SPM and let the fills settle clean.

Dark navy, charcoal, black or deep forest green fabric backgrounds make this one sing. The white wave foam and clouds pop hard against dark grounds, and the yellow sun reads like a beacon. On white or pale fabric it still works but youre losing some of that drama. One customer ordered it last summer for her sailing club end-of-season prize jackets. She told me ya wouldnt believe how fast they went, every member wanted one.

Pick your size based on placement. Five options gives you enough range to go from a cap patch up to a full pillow centrepiece, and the circular framing keeps it self-contained so placement decisions are pretty forgiving. Use dark fabric when you can, it makes the most of the white foam and that yellow sun.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Nautical-themed cap or hat embroideryRun the 3.5-inch on a structured navy cap crown where the circular composition fits the panel shape without a border
  • Sailing club or yacht club jacket back patchPlace the 6 or 7-inch on a sailing jacket back panel as a club badge that looks professional rather than homemade
  • Canvas tote for a beach or marina bagStitch the 5-inch on a waxed canvas tote for a beach or marina bag, navy thread on tan canvas works well
  • Throw pillow centrepiece for a nautical living roomCenter the largest size on a navy throw pillow where white wave foam pops hard against deep blue fabric
  • Beach towel corner embroideryPlace the mid-size in the corner of a thick cotton beach towel for a surf club or beach house gift
  • Kids nautical bedroom cushionRun the 5-inch on a white canvas cushion for a childs nautical bedroom above the bunk or reading nook
  • Zip hoodie chest placement for surf or sail brandsUse the 4-inch on a zip hoodie left chest for a sailing brand where the circular frame reads as a logo placement
  • Canvas duffel bag for sailing gearStitch the 6-inch on a waxed canvas duffel side panel for someone who keeps their sailing kit in order

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
