The turtle's whole body is stitched in those two-tone greens you see on real hawksbills, darker on top and that lighter almost-yellow green underneath on the flippers. Brown shell with the usual scute markings. Then the shell cracks open, and thats where it gets interesting.

Rising up out of the shell is a full coral reef garden. Theres a red rose-shaped coral on the left, pink tube sponges in the middle, orange branching antler coral going upward, white finger coral splaying out like a hand, and then the right side is all deep blues, two thick blue tube corals pointing straight up and a purple-to-teal fan section filling the gap. Little seaweed leaves tuck in at the edges to frame the whole thing. Its actually the shell thats doing the work here, the turtle is almost just the delivery system for the reef.

And the colour variety is what sells it. Thirteen threads, twelve colour changes, my workhorse software digitised so the transitions are clean. One customer sent me a photo of this on a pale linen tote and honestly it looked like something youd buy in a museum gift shop. The contrast between the earthy greens of the turtle and all that bright coral colour is really something on a light background.

Stick to white, cream, natural linen or pale blue. Dark fabric swallows the detail on the reef section and you lose the colour contrast thats the whole point. Wovens and canvas work best, the dense fill on the turtle body needs something with a bit of structure. Run a woven-cotton-weight tearaway or a light cutaway under canvas for best results. Hoop firm and stitch slow on the colour changes, 168 trims on the small size so the machine's going to stop a lot. Worth it though.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Tropical tote bags and beach canvasStitch onto a natural canvas tote and the reef colours pop against the raw linen like a Caribbean postcard
  • Ocean-themed wall hoops and framed piecesHoop in a 10-inch frame with raw linen backing and hang it as wall art in a beach house or sunroom
  • Marine conservation and wildlife apparelWorks brilliantly on a white tee or tote for ocean charity fundraisers or reef conservation events
  • Kids and nursery turtle decorScale down to the 5-inch size for a kids room cushion or a small nursery hoop with a nature theme
  • Coastal cushion covers and home textilesEmbroider on a cream cushion cover for a coastal living room, the 13 colours give it that gallery-quality look
  • Reef-themed gift items and patchesMakes a really nice iron-on patch backing for bags, jackets or hats when hooped on a patch blank
  • Dive shop and aquarium staff uniformsPut it on a navy or white polo for a dive shop, marine biology class or aquarium front-of-house uniform

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
