So heres my seagull, drew her last spring after a customer in maine asked for a coastal design for her dads memory blanket project. Shes a herring gull standing tall on a small patch of sandy rocks, head turned to look right, wings folded neat across her back. Stitch range goes 8k on the small up to 22k on the 7.5 inch.
Eleven thread colours total. The head and breast sit white with cream highlights, wings in two greys, then black across the wing tips and tail bar, yellow on the beak with a tiny red gonys spot, orange on the legs and webbed feet. Wing feathers stitched with directional stitching so the layered look reads proper, not flat. Density 494 puts it light, doesnt take long on a 5x7 hoop.
Best fabric pairings are mid-weight cotton tee, canvas tote, jersey hoodie or a linen tea towel. Skip dark navy or black blanks, the white body section will look chalky and you lose the soft grey wing detail. Drop tearaway behind woven fabric and a no-show mesh cutaway on knits, the directional fills want a stable backing.
I get messages every spring from coastal gift shops in cornwall and the carolinas wanting to stock seagull merch. One customer ordered the 6 inch on six tea towels last april for her mums 70th birthday, the family had spent years summering on the dorset coast and the gulls reminded em of the beach hut. Thats the kinda story this design picks up a lot.
Pop the 4 inch on a chest tee or canvas pouch, run the 7.5 across a tea towel or kitchen apron front. Pair it with a tiny stitched wave or shell cluster down by the feet for a small coastal scene. The directional wing detail honestly looks better the larger you go.
