The shaggy dog has its head on a slight tilt, and you can just barely see the two dark eyes peeking out through all that fringe. Its a dog with so much hair you can barely see its face, and thats exactly the point. The silhouette does all the work here. Fur layers are done with long overlapping satin columns going in slightly different directions so it has that ruffled tousled look, not a flat smooth coat at all.

Only 5 colours: warm tan, golden brown, mid brown, cream for the lighter fur highlights and black for the eye and nose. Simple palette, suprisingly effective. The depth comes from direction changes across the fur sections, not from loading up on extra thread colours. Density is 941 which gives solid coverage without being overly stiff on smaller pieces.

My customers who have long-haired dogs like Shih Tzus, Old English Sheepdogs or Lhasa Apsos pick this one up regularly, they see their dog in it. A good friend asked me to stitch this last September on a tote bag for someone whose beloved Shih Tzu had just passed. It was a really meaningful use for it and she said the recipient cried. Nice to know embroidery can do that.

5 sizes from 2.33 to 4.99 inches wide, taller than wide, heights going from 3 in to top 7span. Even at the widest size its portrait orientation. Good for tote fronts, bag pockets, cushions. Largest hits 35,204 stitches. Use cutaway on knit fabrics and cotton jersey, tearaway works on stiff denim or canvas.

Works on most fabric colours except very dark brown or tan which blends into the fur. White, cream, navy, forest green and grey all contrast well. Best results on medium weight cotton twill or canvas where the fur detail stays raised and doesnt sink in.
