Mocked up this skull-butterfly after a customer asked me for something that was gothic but not heavy, she wanted the vibe without the density. The butterfly is the main event here, big wings taking up most of the frame, but when you look at the centre you realise the body of the butterfly IS a skull. The eye sockets of the skull sit right where a butterfly thorax would be. Its a visual trick that works realy well on fabric because your eye bounces between seeing butterfly and seeing skull.

All in black. 1 colour, no stops, no colour changes. my workhorse software digitised the wings with directional satin fill at density 602, the feathered wing-tip detail is done with a light pass that keeps it airy at the edges rather than blocky. 43 trims in the file, which sounds like a lot for a single-colour piece but each wing cell needs its own trim to stay crisp. Pop cutaway under stretchy black tees, its worth the extra step, dont skip it thinking tearaway will hold on jersey.

5 sizes, 3 inches up to 7 inches. At the 3-inch the skull face is still readable, which suprised me when I first tested it. The 7-inch at 27,409 stitches is the one to pick if youre going on a jacket back or a canvas tote front where you want the full wingspan drama. Email me if your machine flags the jump count on the smaller sizes, I can resave a condensed version.

Best on a black tee with ivory poly thread, which sounds counterintuitive but the tonal effect with just the texture variation reads really strong. Or go classic ivory thread on a black tee. Avoid topping on smooth wovens, it traps under the wingtip detail and makes those delicate outline stitches harder to trim cleanly. Pair with any skull or botanical element for a matching set this october.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Black tee gothic chest pieceThe 5-inch version centred on a black tee chest in ivory poly thread gives the classic tonal skull-butterfly effect.
  • Denim jacket back panel statementAt 7 inches on a denim jacket back the full wingspan hits like a proper statement piece without needing colour.
  • Halloween tote bag frontThe 5-inch on a black canvas tote front reads clearly and works year-round, not just for halloween.
  • Canvas crossbody bag accentThe 4-inch drops onto a crossbody bag flap panel cleanly, the symmetric shape helps with placement centering.
  • Goth-style pillow cover centrepieceUse the 7-inch on a black linen pillow for a gothic home accent, cutaway backing keeps it stable long-term.
  • Bandana or scarf corner motifThe 3-inch in the corner of a bandana stitched on natural cotton is subtle but detailed up close.
  • Craft-fair patch for resale on feltCut felt patches with the 3-inch and sell finished patches at craft fairs, the black-on-black sells well.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
