My niece stitched this onto her school backpack in about 45 minutes and it got compliments the same day. Its that kind of design - instantly recognizable, hits the retro-cute sweet spot without trying too hard. The face is a big orange circle with a wide open grin, and the sunglasses are heart-shaped with pink and green horizontal stripes inside them, which is honestly the detail that makes the whole thing work.

Six colours total so theres a few thread changes to manage but nothing overly complicated. The peace-sign hands on either side give it that 70s energy and the chunky black outlines mean even medium sizes read really clearly. Back it with a cutaway stabiliser on knit fabrics - the orange fill is fairly dense at the larger sizes and youll need that backing to stop the fabric pulling. On wovens a tearaway works fine.

Use the colour stops as shown in the file - lenses go in first, orange body fills next, black outline last. 11 sizes from just under 2 inches to 7.5 max, so it scales from a small patch up to a hoodie chest print. Ping me a note if youve got questions about thread swaps. Im always happy to help. At 7809 stitches on the 3-in size up to 39106 on the 7.5-in size, runs clean on cream cotton, linen, or fleece. Skip dark fabric for the colour pop. Pop a firm cutaway behind stretch knits.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Teen backpacks, pencil cases, and zip pouches for that retro-patch aestheticThe compact sizes stitch clean on backpack fabric panels without puckering.
  • Denim jackets and tote bags where the orange and pink really popOrange and black on blue denim is a strong combo - very visible and wears well.
  • Kids birthday party iron-on patches or bag personalisation giftsAt smaller sizes this finishes fast, good for batch-making party favour patches.
  • Hoodie chest or sleeve using one of the larger sizesThe largest size fills a hoodie chest nicely, the orange reads warm against grey or black fabric.
  • Throw pillow covers for a kids room or teen bedroomOn white or cream cushion covers the six colours really show off well against a neutral base.
  • Caps and beanies using the smaller compact sizesSmaller sizes work on structured cap panels if you use the right stabiliser underneath.
  • Craft fair iron-on patch sets paired with other retro motifsPairs well with other retro motifs like rainbows or flowers for a set of coordinated patches.

Behind every stitch

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
