Drew up this sun wave combo after a customer kept asking for something beachy that wasnt just a plain circle sun. The sun itself isnt a full circle, its more of a crescent, like the body curves inward on the right side so the wave can swoop out from it. Rays stick out around it in that classic flame-tip shape, each one a separate satin run so theyre crisp at the edges. Four colours in total: yellow and orange dominate the rays, then teal and cobalt blue handle the wave tail and a couple of the lower rays.

And the wave part is whats actually interesting here. Its not a separate element sitting below the sun, its connected, curling outward and pulling the ocean behind it. Three layered satin curves stack on top of each other with the colours going yellow on top, then teal, then dark navy at the bottom edge. Looks almost like a brushstroke when its stitched out.

Density is low at 300 stitches per square inch, and the biggest size tops out at around 10,000 stitches total. Ive stitched this on canvas pouches and it punched way above its stitch count. Smallest size is 2.05 by 3.01 inches, biggest runs to 4.77 by 7.01 inches. Last summer a customer did the mid-size on a beach tote in natural cotton and sent a photo, the teal wave against the raw fabric was exactly what Id hoped it would look like.

Use a medium-weight cutaway stabiliser for best results. Light woven cotton, canvas or linen works well. Avoid stretchy fabric because those long satin rays will pull and gap. Hoop with the grain of the fabric to keep that long curl lying flat.

Stitch order goes sun body first, then rays, then the wave. Keep thread tension a little looser than normal for the long satin segments or youll get that puckering on the curve. Pop it off the hoop and trim any jump threads on the inside before washing. Holler through the store if that swooping section puckers on your fabric and Ill walk you through fixing the tension settings.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Beach tote bags in natural cotton canvasStitch the mid-size on a hemp tote front and the teal and yellow pop perfectly against the raw fabric colour
  • Summer camp T-shirts for kidsThe kid-friendly vibe works on camp shirts, the medium size fits nicely on a chest pocket area
  • Coastal-themed tea towelsDrop the smallest size onto a white linen tea towel for a coastal kitchen set that sells well at markets
  • Kids swim bag front panelA swim bag front panel suits the 3-inch version, durable enough for repeated poolside use with cutaway backing
  • Vacation journal cover patchIron-on transfer to a journal cover or patch fabric, then stitch onto a vacation scrapbook cover
  • Surf school cap embellishmentCustomers have been putting the small size on structured caps, it sits flat and the line art stays clean
  • Holiday gift pouch for beach loversThe 2-inch version fits on a drawstring gift pouch for a beach-themed birthday or holiday hamper

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
