Ive sold a bunch of mermaid designs over the years but this twin version keeps coming back as the one people reorder for gifts. Last spring a customer ordered three of them on separate tote bags for a beach party set, and I thought that was such a good idea I started suggesting it myself. The two figures face each other with their tails crossing at the base, so the whole thing reads as one composition rather than just two separate drawings side by side.

The style is line art only, single teal thread, every strand of hair drawn out and the tail scales built from layered curves. Its that kind of drawn-by-hand feel even though its a machine file. Nine sizes from 2.60 inches wide up to 5.58 inches, stitches from 6,686 to 12,752. Hoop with a medium-weight cutaway under anything stretchy. Skip tear-away on jersey entirely. On a stable woven like cotton twill or canvas a single layer of tear-away works, but the lines are thin enough that stabiliser tension matters more than usual here.

The outline-only style means it works on any fabric colour since there is no fill to disappear into a dark base. Ive seen it done in white thread on navy linen and in gold thread on a deep teal tote. And the mirrored tail shape makes a natural centred placement on a chest or front panel of a bag. the 3 in run fits neatly on a kids swim bag, the 7-inch version fills a full pillow panel. Use the larger sizes on structured canvas where the density of outlines can breathe without pulling.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Kids swim bag or beach tote front panelthe 3 in run fits a standard swim bag panel with room around the zip hardware.
  • Girls bedroom pillow or cushion coverAt 5-6 inches it centres nicely on a standard square cushion cover with decent margin.
  • Cotton onesie or baby bodysuit chestThe 2.6-inch smallest size sits well on a chest panel without covering shoulder seams.
  • Linen tote with ocean themeSingle teal thread on natural linen reads bright and clean on a flat tote front.
  • Denim jacket back yoke placementThe 7-inch version fills a back yoke panel on a denim jacket without running into seams.
  • Framed fabric art for a nautical roomStitched on raw linen and placed in a float frame it reads as wall art at 5-6 inches.
  • Birthday gift on a drawstring bagWorks on a plain cotton drawstring bag as a personalised gift, pair with a name patch.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
