The gnome hat here is so big it takes over basically the whole upper half of the design, thats what makes this one work, its got that funny lopsided charm where the hat is clearly too large for whoever is wearing it. Underneath the giant red floppy hat is a massive fluffy white beard, and below that just barely poking out are two little stumpy boots. The gnome is holding a red heart out front, both tiny arms wrapped around it.

Five colors and a density of 956 on the largest size, which puts this at just under 44,000 stitches for the full 7-in. The hat uses dense tatami fill to get that solid red look, the beard is done in a light fluffy satin that creates the texture, and its the beard that people always comment on first when they see it stitched up. Dense design, youll need a good stabiliser setup, cutaway is my recommendation regardless of fabric type.

Gnomes have been popular on valentine designs for a few years now and I keep getting asked do I have one, so I made this, it fills a gap. One customer emailed me last valentines to say she stitched the 6-in piece on a sweatshirt for her mum who collects gnomes, her mum keeps the shirt in her closet year round. Thats the kind of thing I love hearing.

Works best on mid-weight cotton fleece or sweatshirt material where the dense stitching can sink in properly. Skip thin quilting cotton for the larger sizes. Keep your fabric hooped tight, dont let it shift during the hat section or the fills wont line up. Stitch on cream, navy, grey or white for the best colour contrast against the red hat and white beard.

Email me if you need help with the file and I'll sort you out.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
