Mocked up this lil gnome fella after customers kept asking for something whimsical and cute rather than the usual hearts-and-script valentine designs. Hes wearing a full red outfit with tiny white hearts on the fabric, holding a big red heart balloon by a string. The beard is white and fluffy, the nose is a peach blush circle, and his boots are black. Theres something about the slight lean of the figure that makes him look like the balloon is pulling him upward, which is what people keep commenting on when they post their finishes online last february.

4 colours in the file: red for the garment and balloon fill, a light peach for the blush cheeks, white for the beard and those lil heart details on the outfit, and black for the boots and outline work. digitising tools did the colour sequence so the 4 stops land in a logical order with minimal jump threads showing on the front. Density sits at 402, which is lighter than most decorative designs, so it stitches out fast and doesnt stiffen the fabric underneath. Pick a 75/11 needle and youre good to go on knit or fleece.

5 sizes from 2.35 inches up to about 5 inches wide. Use tearaway for woven cotton and cutaway if youre on knit or stretch. The figure is taller than it is wide so check your hoop clearance, the 5-inch size needs at least a 5x7 hoop for the full height. Email me if you want to confirm clearance numbers before you load the file. Best stitch out Ive seen was a customer who hooped the 4-inch on a thick terry towel last valentines, used polyfilm on plush terry, the gnome came out clean and the beard had real definition.

Pop the small size on a kids shirt pocket and it just looks right. Stitch the larger hoop on a fleece zip-up and the gnome sits perfectly in the centre chest.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Kids' valentine shirt pocket or chest placementStitch the 2.5-inch run on cotton shirt breast pocket for kids, tearaway stabiliser works fine on woven fabric.
  • Terry cloth hand towel for a valentine gift setRun the 4-in design on a terry cloth hand towel with a polyfilm layer so the beard detail stays sharp.
  • Felt or fleece valentine gift bagPop the 3-inch size on a felt gift bag front, no stabiliser needed for stiff felt, stitches clean without puckering.
  • Seasonal kitchen apron frontAdd the 4-inch version to a canvas apron bib for a seasonal kitchen gift, pairs well with red gingham trim.
  • Tote bag for a school valentine partyUse a 3.5 hoop on a cotton party bag for a kids school valentine, quick to stitch and easy to gift.
  • Quilted potholder or oven mitt frontStitch the small size onto a quilted potholder front, the compact figure fits well in the centre without crowding.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
