Sketched out this gnome concept when I was working through a batch of lock-and-key ideas for valentines. The combination of the pink heart padlock and the gnome holding the matching gold key is kind of an obvious pairing once you see it, but I havent come across many digitised versions that work well at smaller hoop sizes, most lose the key detail below 4 inches.

Its 9 thread colours, the striped hot-pink hat alone uses 3 of those shades. Stitch count is 15,682 at the smallest up to 40,125 at the 7.07 inch height. Back with polymesh on any stretch fabric, the gnome body has some dense fill areas that can distort knit without solid stabiliser underneath. The gold key thread is a metallic-adjacent colour so if you use an actual metallic thread there, slow the machine to about 400 spm on those passes.

People have been buying this one for valentines day gift bags and cushion covers. One customer ordered a set for a gnome-themed nursery where the mum had collected gnomes through the pregnancy, the key and lock concept made sense in that context too. The arrow through the hat adds a little Cupid nod without it being too obvious.

Sizes run 3.51 to 7.51 inches wide. Use a 80/12 needle for the denser fill passes. Pop it on a fleece blanket or a quilted zip pouch. Its a solid seasonal gift item, and honestly its one of those gnome designs that doesnt look like it came off a bulk clip art site.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Valentine cushion covers with a whimsical gnome themeCentre the 7 inch size on a throw pillow for a seasonal swap; the hot-pink hat reads from across the room.
  • Kids gift bags or tote bags for valentines dayCanvas tote bags work well; stitch at 5 inches on a natural linen bag for a craft-market-friendly look.
  • Fleece blankets and lap throws as February giftsThe gnome proportions scale nicely onto a fleece square; great for a quick-stitch gift with minimal prep.
  • Gnome-collection nursery items for new parentsGnome-themed nurseries are a real niche, the key and lock concept works beyond just valentines.
  • Quilted zip pouches and cosmetic bags for craft marketsThe design footprint is roughly square so it fills a zip pouch front panel cleanly at the 4 inch range.
  • Sweatshirt left-chest designs for adults who collect gnomesLeft chest at 3-4 inches on a hoodie gives a subtle gnome collector detail that not everyone will notice right away.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
