This whale in a bottle scene is a 14 colour ocean piece thats been buzzing around my catalog all year. Round teal potion-style bottle holds the whole little sea inside, the humpback breaches diagonal across the middle, waves curling round his body with white foam caps on the crests. Two tiny black bird silhouettes glide up in the sky portion, an orange-brown cork sits up on the neck. Glass of the bottle picks up a thin navy outline so the scene reads through clearly.

Honestly Ive seen this marine tattoo motif loads on instagram and wanted a proper stitchable version for ocean and beach merch. Nine hoops carry the file, stitch counts step from 17,850 up to 51,656. Black outline carries most of the heavy work at 4,788 to 6,019 stitches alone, teal wave fill comes second at 2,401 to 3,347, the dark whale body lands fourth. Density runs 1,319 stitches per inch squared which sits firmly on the heavier side of my catalog, ill be honest. Hoop a No.75 sharp through with solid 2.5oz tearaway under any woven, swap to cutaway for fleece or itll pucker.

Whale body itself runs directional satin curving along his back which gives him that solid weighty look. Dont skip the underlay. Waves stack a darker teal under a lighter teal, with foam crests added last as small satin caps. Bottle glass gets a thin curved highlight on the right edge which sells the round shape. Birds are simple V-shaped jump satin, tiny and clean. Sizes step from a 2.44 inch tall mini up to a 7.50 inch tall version, the 5 inch file is the one I reach for most on tee chest placement.

Run it on cotton tees, fleece beanies, linen pyjama tops, canvas tote sides, denim jackets, and a quilt block. Lemme tell ya, the wave fills want tearaway behind woven cotton, swap to medium cutaway under fleece. Avoid white or pale grey grounds because foam caps disapear against em, slate teal cream or pale blue are all great. Last summer one buyer asked for the 7 inch file for her dads retirement jacket, he was a navy diver, the breaching whale meant alot to him. Drop a topping over pique knit and customise the bottle outline colour for a vintage feel.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Cotton tee chest pocket for ocean and marine loversTee chest pockets handle the 4 inch version, hoop with tearaway and a No.75 sharp, position centred above the pocket seam.
  • Denim jacket back panel for surfer or sailor wardrobeDenim jacket backs love the 7 inch hit, heavy cutaway and a stable large hoop centred between the shoulder seams.
  • Canvas beach tote side for summer pool daysBeach totes take the 5.5 inch on the front panel, tearaway behind canvas keeps the dense fills flat and crisp.
  • Fleece beanie cuff for winter coastal walksFleece beanie cuffs work great at 3 inches with medium cutaway and a topping so foam caps dont sink into nap.
  • Linen pyjama top chest hit for cosy bedtime wearLinen pyjama chests handle the 4.5 inch version, hoop with a small frame and tearaway under woven linen.
  • Quilt block centre for a maritime themed throwQuilt blocks come out clean at 5 inches on quilters cotton, tearaway and a small hoop press.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
