After stitching out a fair amount of bird designs over the years, this big-eyed owl is the one people actually respond to. Those eyes are the whole point: two massive circular saucers that take up most of the face, done in a dark outline with a highlighted pupil spot that gives it that alive kawaii quality. The cartoon body is round and compact, the wings fold in snugly, and youll see it reads as a very plump satisfied owl sitting on an invisible branch.
Four colours, density 390, stitch count from 12523 at the smallest up to 20948 at 7.5 inches wide. Four sizes running 4.5 reaching 7.5 in and 4.3 to 7.16 inches tall. Use cutaway stabiliser across most fabrics, particularly on knits and anything with pile. The directional satin on the owl body feathers runs in short angled strokes that change direction between upper and lower wing sections, giving a sense of layered feathering even though its only 4 thread colours. Add a water-soluble topping on fleece or minky to stop pile from pushing into the eye detail. Stitch on felt or thick canvas if youre worried about the density without extra topping.
I remember a customer buying this last spring for her kids bedroom curtain tie-backs; she embroidered the owl onto a felt backing and used it as a decorative holdback. Genuine bit of craft that worked. Pick warm brown and cream thread if youre going for classic colouring, or try grey and white for a more graphic cartoon feel. Best on items where the full round cartoon body can be appreciated, so dont put it in a narrow placement where the wing edges get cut off. The bobbin thread should match the backing so the underside stays tidy on anything where both sides show.
What people are using this design for
A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.
- Kids bedroom decor items and nursery accessoriesStitch on a large felt piece and use as a curtain tie-back holdback for a childs bedroom; the round shape reads well at arm height from across the room.
- Childrens clothing patches and appliqueKids jacket back at the 4.5-inch as a patch; cutaway stabiliser backing keeps the dense fill from distorting through daily wear.
- Novelty tote bags and backpack panelsCentre it on a canvas backpack front pocket for a school bag that stands out; the 5-inch size fits most panel widths without crowding the zip.
- Woodland-themed quilting and fabric craftsStitch blocks on cotton and use as quilt squares in a woodland animals nursery quilt with tree and leaf fabrics; the round face tiles well in a grid.
- Gift items for bird lovers and nature fansPut the large 7.5-in chest run on tote bag front panel for a bird-lover gift bag with real visual impact; natural canvas base works best.
- Personalised school supplies and book bagsStitch on book bag fabric panels for a personalised back-to-school item; the round face pairs well with a name below in a rounded font.

About the artist
Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site
Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.
That's the joy I work for.
The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
