Mocked up this cardinal after several customers asked for a detailed bird that wasnt a cute cartoon, they wanted something that looked like it was actually a bird. Its a male northern cardinal, which is that bright red species with the crest on top, standing in profile on a large filled circle that acts like a graphic backdrop. The pose is still and dignified, tail down, head level. The black face mask sits cleanly against the scarlet body, and the orange beak is its own tiny detail that catches your eye once you see it. The red circle behind the bird isnt just a plain fill, it provides contrast so the darker feather shading on the wings reads clearly instead of disappearing into the body colour.

Six colours built into this one: the main scarlet body, a deeper maroon for the wing shadow, grey for mid-tone feathers, orange for the beak, black for the mask and outline, white for the eye highlight. Five colour changes, four sizes running from 4.51 inches wide at the smallest up to 7.51 inches on the largest. my main digitising tool mapped the feather layers cleanly, each row of stitching at a slightly different angle so the surface has the kind of depth you get on a real painted illustration. At 31,794 stitches on the large size, this is a proper dense piece, send me message if your machine is struggling with a 7-inch dense fill because sometimes older machines need the jump stitches reduced a bit.

One customer stitched the 6-inch chest on a kraft-coloured linen pillow last autumn, the scarlet bird against that warm neutral looked like something youd see in a nature magazine illustration. Lay light cutaway anything that stretches. Pair the 7.5-in piece with a 40-weight thread for better feather definition in the dense fill areas. Skip light fabrics under the circle area unless you pre-hoop an extra layer.

Stitch on kraft linen, cream canvas, or dark navy for the strongest contrast. Use cutaway stabiliser on knit and woven stretch fabrics. Add topping on any textured surface so the feather detail doesnt sink. Pick the 4.51-inch version for christmas or wildlife ornament designs. Run the 7 inch jumbo on a pillow or a tote front panel where the bird has room to sit.

What people are using this design for

A starting point. The design works for plenty more than just this list, this is what folks have stitched it onto most.

  • Wildlife-themed throw pillows and home decorThe 7.5-inch version fills a pillow cover on cream or kraft linen, the red and black colouring reads well on neutral backgrounds.
  • Nature-inspired tote bags and grocery bagsStitch on a canvas tote at 5 inches for a nature-themed bag that holds up to regular washing with cutaway stabiliser.
  • Embroidered winter scarves and wrapsThe 4.51-inch version sits well across a scarf end, use tearaway on the woven fabric and hoop carefully.
  • Cardinal and bird-watching themed giftsMakes a strong standalone gift for bird watchers stitched on a framed canvas panel or linen wall hanging.
  • Seasonal jacket back or sleeve patch designsUse on a jacket back or denim shirt panel where the red circle gives a graphic badge look.
  • Framed hoop art for nature-themed roomsHoop on pre-stretched fabric in a 9-inch display hoop as finished wall art for a nature-themed room.

About the artist

Reyazul Masud Riham, hand-drawing every design on this site

Every design on Re Embroidery is hand-digitized by one person. Each file gets sketched, color-matched, and stitch-tested on real fabric before it earns a place in the shop. No team. No auto-conversion from images. Just slow, deliberate work, sometimes three or four days per design.

That's the joy I work for.

The hard part is finding my designs re-uploaded and resold elsewhere. So when you buy from Re Embroidery, you're paying one real person for the file you're about to download. That matters.
